Director of Analytics

We are looking for a Director of Analytics to lead our growing Data & Analytics function (and wider community of analysts and data gurus) of 10+ people. This position is based either at our HQ in Helsinki, our second largest hub in Berlin, or really anywhere as we support fully remote working.

In this role you will manage a growing team of Data Scientists and Data/Business Analysts, whilst bringing together the wider analytics community at Aiven (that includes Data Analysts reporting into other functions, and our centralised Data Engineering team). You will also partner with key stakeholders across the entire organization, including members of the leadership team, to achieve business impact, particularly around helping Aiven grow in the right way.

You should have a strong problem-solving ability and a knack for statistical analysis. Our ideal candidate will live and breathe data, whilst being a servant leader, an experienced mentor and be passionate about developing people and themselves.

Our platform is built around BigQuery, Airflow, and dbt and is run on GCP. We own and manage all of our infrastructure and services related to the platform. We use Python and SQL to accomplish our daily tasks and we work in two-week sprints to get things done. More recently, we've been expanding into streaming analytics (Kafka & Flink using Aiven), Kubernetes (Airflow tasks on Kubernetes), data observability (Monte Carlo), and MLops (MLFlow & Feast).

We are not looking for people with a data analytics (and science/engineering) mindset only, but to be successful in the role you also need to have a genuine interest towards Aiven as a company and willingness to understand the ins and outs of our business and industry.

Responsibilities

• Lead, manage and develop a (growing) team of 5 data analysts and scientists
• Partner with the Manager of Data Engineering to ensure alignment
• Enable and encourage collaboration with the wider Data & Analytics Community at Aiven
• Partner with (and challenge) key stakeholders and the leadership team to effectively understand the business goals and objectives and align these to the team's priorities, data products and analytical approach
• Apply expertise in quantitative analysis, data mining, and the presentation of data to bring insights to business areas across Aiven including Product, Sales, Marketing etc.
• Ensure data quality and integrity
• Interpret and analyze data problems
• Conceive, plan and prioritize data projects
• Build analytic systems and predictive models
• Test performance of data-driven products
• Experiment with new models and techniques
• Ensure we continue to use and improve upon the world-class tooling for our internal data needs

• Demonstrated ability of leading analytical and data science teams, and a proven track record of hiring, managing and developing individuals of varying levels of expertise
• Experience measuring, managing and driving behavioral change through the use of data and analytics in order to support stronger decision making and able to spot opportunities to drive business growth from their craft
• Expertise in data management, modelling techniques, data visualization and quality
• A knack for statistical analysis and predictive modelling
• Statistical analysis experience with packages such as R, Python etc.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills
• Very good business acumen
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships to work with other functions and senior business leaders
• Proven ability to manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously
• Able to understand details while keeping an eye on the bigger picture
