ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Director of Data Science at Shoprunner, you’ll lead our Data Science team of seven data scientists as we build models for ShopRunner. Our data science team is full-stack, meaning we own the DS process end-to-end from training models to API deployment. We code in Python, and we use technologies like PySpark and Elasticsearch.

Responsibilities:

• Manage about 5-8 data scientists
• Set strategic direction for the data science discipline in conjunction with the data science product manager and lead data scientists
• Manage the department’s entire portfolio of projects and workstreams including vetting the work for quality and correctness
• Identify and promote opportunities for new data-driven products
• Develop relationships throughout all parts of the company to increase the data science organization’s influence
• Grow and develop data scientists by allocating projects that balance abilities, interests, and growth
• Manage relationships with external partners and vendors
  
  

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

• You’ve managed data scientists at a variety of experience levels, potentially spanning from interns to principal data scientists
• You like to iterate on the best processes for your team (we currently use a modified form of Agile)
• You’ve written production code in Python including model training code and APIs to serve model results
• You like working collaboratively with folks who have different experiences than you do
• You like learning about new technologies and are willing to share what you learn back to the team
• You like working with a team of goofy people that enjoy each other and like to have fun at work
• You foster healthy, friendly, collaborative work environments
• You have been involved in shaping a data science team’s product strategy
• You have the organizational skills to stay on top of many projects running in parallel
• You are comfortable working in a fast paced startup-like environment where company priorities may shift
