The Role

BlueOwl is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Data Warehouse and Data Lake team. In this role, you will partner with teams from across the organization to continue to develop and evolve the foundation of our data insights platform. 

As a leader for this team, your background in data warehousing and data lakes will be essential to enable you to hit the ground running. You will help set the strategic vision for the team while balancing product development priorities. We are looking for a leader that can help mentor and level up engineering talent as well as empower and elevate individual contributors. 

You will be joining the team at an opportune moment to have a high impact. You will help lead the team’s transition from Redshift to Snowflake and the formulation of a strategy to align the team to company strategic shifts. It will be essential to guide the team to laying the foundation for their future success. 

Your day-to-day

  • Work with a team of 4 individuals building our data warehouse

  • Collaborate with product and business teams to understand and capture business needs for the development team. 

  • Build long term strategic roadmaps to drive the future of our data insights platform.

  • Partner closely with the Data Analytics team to allow for cross team contributions

  • Work to improve system health and reliability through focusing on aspects such as data quality, data timeliness 

  • Collaborate with Development and Security teams to enhance our data security

  • Promote a supportive culture focused on building reliable systems and processes based on established best practices in the industry.

  • Develop methods to automate and improve engineering processes.

  • Test and examine code written by others, analyzing results, and providing constructive feedback when necessary.

  • Work with developers to establish requirements and best practices for improving velocity.

  • Work with the team to design, plan, and break down projects into tasks.

About you

  • Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience.

  • 2+ years of experience of people management
  • 8+ years of experience in software engineering.

  • 5+ years of experience working with data warehousing technology.

  • Strong background and experience with SQL and Python.

  • Experience with technologies such as Redshift, Snowflake, S3, Redash, Amplitude and Tableau.

  • Strong understanding of data governance.

  • Background in data modeling and data architecture.

  • Experience and understanding of Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, AWS CDK, Chef, Puppet, or Ansible.

  • Experience working in cloud services such as AWS or GCP.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to lead discussions, contribute during code reviews, and capture tasks.

  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and great attention to detail.

  • Experience with agile development practices.

Salary: $250,000 - $410,000

  • Important note: all offered salaries are based on many factors, including experience in a similar role and geographic location of the candidate.

  • Location: We are a remote-first company for most positions so you may work from anywhere you like in the U.S, excluding U.S. territories.  Occasional travel may be required for team meetings or company gatherings.  Employees based in the San Francisco Bay Area or in Providence, Rhode Island may commute to one of our local offices as desired.  
  • Hours: We maintain core meeting hours from 9AM - 3PM Pacific time for collaborating with team members across all time zones.
