Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.
The Risk Machine Learning team is part of Square’s Risk team. As the lead for Risk ML you will be on Square’s Risk Leadership team that oversees over 150 people and lead a team of Data Scientists and Machine Learning Engineers in building capabilities that ensure safe, responsible, and value-accretive growth for Square and our sellers. You will ship solutions that improve the lives of Square’s merchants and the agents that serve them every day. The focus of this role is organizational leadership and growth, with a deep connection to inspire and motivate the organization. This is also a role that calls for collaboration and partnerships with Marketing, Sales, Account Management, Product Teams, and more. We’re looking for an inquisitive, metrics-driven, empathetic individual that is not afraid of challenging assumptions, diving into the data, and double checking results.
Provide Leadership and Supervision: You will lead innovation within Risk as part of the Risk leadership team, monitoring key business risks and implement the data needs of the business; manage data science/machine learning team(s) and oversee all activities that ensure alignment with Risk and business-wide vision and strategies. You will also play a role in the development of Risk’s vision, capabilities, infrastructure, and road map for the launch of additional machine learning capabilities.
Strategy: You will help create industry-leading model/metric performance by applying creative data-sources, and employing state-of-the-art machine learning at Square. You will scope and implement machine-learning models to support Risk’s initiatives and programs and help achieve the overall business objective and targets.
Collaboration: You will represent Risk across other Data and Analytics Teams within Square, and work with Product Management, Policy, Operations, UX/Design, Engineering and other organizations across Risk and Square. You will be a trusted advisor and member of the Risk leadership team in the creation and deployment of useful insights that inform and activate strategies across the business.
Machine Learning/Modeling: You will promote experimental data modeling designs, run A/B tests to evaluate changes in the business’s product/services, track the business’s performance of ML models vs expected performance and monitor trends in key business indicators, providing valuable insights to relevant departments for overall performance improvement.
