Principal Data Scientist - Marketing Algorithms

This is a senior IC leadership position for someone with 10+ years of prior industry experience in a research role designing algorithms to support bid optimization, ad creative optimization, content creation, and targeted ad delivery. As a Principal Scientist within our Data Science and Machine Learning group, you will drive our biggest challenges, turning business asks and creative ideas that do not have an obvious blueprint into scalable modelling solutions that run in real-time. This is an individual-contributor role focused on research and implementation of novel approaches and techniques that cut across our entire stack: from ad buying, bidding, & pricing optimization to attribution measurement and experimentation, you will touch the experience of all of our customers across all of our sites, apps, and marketing channels. You will get an opportunity to work with one of the largest e-commerce datasets out there, come up with innovative algorithms and solutions, and work with a growing team of ~150 to test these solutions in live experiments, and implement them as scalable production systems.

What you will do

  • Provide technical leadership in the development of an automated and intelligent advertising system by advancing the state-of-the-art in machine (and deep) learning techniques to support bidding optimization, ad creative optimization & content creation, and targeted ad delivery.
  • Setup large-scale tests and deploy promising ideas quickly and broadly, managing deadlines and deliverables while applying the latest theories to develop new and improved products, processes, or technologies.
  • Keep abreast of relevant research in online ad auction design, computational advertising, computational economics, search and information retrieval, online advertising (sponsored search), and privacy protection.
  • Maintain expert knowledge in computer science, machine (and deep) learning, data mining, natural language processing, reinforcement learning, machine perception algorithms, large-scale optimization techniques and more.
  • Engage in broader strategy and execution discussions in the Data Science Organization, providing input from your program experiences to enhance our priorities across the board.
  • Work with cross-functional teams of engineers, scientists, and analysts, to devise implementation and experimentation strategies.
  • Actively contribute to the wider data science and machine-learning community by sharing and publishing your findings, both within Wayfair and through collaborations with research programs at partner universities and technical institutes.

What you bring

  • 10+ years of experience in research & development, with substantial time spent both in an academic setting and within industry or a research-lab type of environment.
  • History of coming up with innovative and creative quantitative solutions, demonstrated through practical business impact and/or publications.
  • Previous expertise in computational advertising, bid optimization, machine (and deep) learning, natural language processing, & machine perception algorithms required.
  • You are hands on and comfortable coding on an industry-standard machine-learning stack (Hadoop/Bigquery, Spark, Python, Jupyter).
  • You love seeing your work through to customer impact!
