Company Description

Since we first opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely – and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take a payment and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, run a busy kitchen, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. And across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow all in one place.

Today, we’re a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex commerce operations, sellers just starting out, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers scale, so do our solutions. We all grow together.

There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a business that is big, meaningful, and lasting. And we are helping sellers around the world do the same.

Job Description

Square's Communications team shares with the world how Square empowers businesses of all types and sizes with powerful and elegant solutions to help them start, run, and grow.

As part of the Communications team, you will bring a data-driven perspective and discipline to our team of PR professionals, and provide quantitative support to uncover newsworthy insights that showcase our sellers, our business, and larger consumer trends. We are looking for someone who loves to tell stories through data and gets a thrill out of diving into a haystack of information to find that perfect metric. We are also looking for a builder, who will help create new processes for managing data and survey requests, and will help us analyze our PR work through measurement.

This position can be located anywhere in the US, and is open to remote work.

You will:

  • Explore Square's vast payments and business data sets to create meaningful narratives for external partners such as journalists, business owners, academics, and policymakers
  • Use Square data to identify trends and insights, including seller usage patterns, payment volume, item-level data, growth metrics, and seasonal fluctuations
  • Lead our efforts to survey and/or poll customers, consumers, and other representative populations to identify unique trends and storytelling opportunities
  • Build a process for and lead the execution of PR message testing to understand what narratives resonate best with our target audience
  • Monitor, measure, analyze, and report on PR campaigns to quantify our impact
  • Collaborate with our communications, marketing, social, content, and government relations teams to help identify trends and insights that highlight Square's sellers and products
  • Perform data analysis using SQL to create reports and analyses
  • Use your technical experience with analytics tools and scientific rigor to produce newsworthy insights
  • Challenge assumptions, and be comfortable working with big and sometimes complicated data to glean interesting, clear findings

Qualifications

You have:

  • 5+ years of analytics, research, or insights experience in a payment, product, marketing, communications, journalism, or policy role
  • A command of data-driven storytelling, including how to spot spurious patterns, prevent correlation vs causation issues, and data cherry picking
  • Advanced proficiency with database querying technologies (we use Snowflake and BigQuery)
  • Understanding of quantitative research and statistical analysis with experience using data to support a point of view
  • Experience driving analytics projects, surveys, message-testing, or polling from beginning to end: question formation, data exploration, statistical analysis, visualization, and presentation
  • The skills to communicate complex analysis to any audience in verbal, visual, and written formats
  • Experience working in collaboration with multiple disciplines as an analytics partner
  • Passion for journalism, media, communications, or storytelling
  • Proficiency with Excel, SQL and data visualization tools like Looker or Tableau

Even better:

  • Understand the payments industry
  • Experience in programming, especially with data science and visualization libraries in Python or R
  • Background in media, journalism, or communications
  • Experience serving as a spokesperson to media or other external parties about data, trends, and analysis

Technologies we teach and use:

  • Query language and databases (Snowflake, BigQuery)
  • Python, R
  • Visualization (Tableau, Looker)
