Security Data Scientist - Duo Security

Duo Security, now part of Cisco, is the leading multi-factor authentication (MFA) and secure access provider.

With the Most Loved Company in Security and the global leader in network technology joining forces, there are more exciting opportunities than ever to be at the forefront of securing the cloud.

Our mission is simple: democratize security by making it easy and effective for everyone. We’re transforming security from the ground up by solving the world’s most pressing geopolitical challenge — safe, secure information access. We engineer our business to enable our customers to easily address their ever-evolving security challenges.

We believe that impactful work is rewarding work and that our team is at its best when everyone feels empowered to bring their whole self to work. We learn together by hiring for cultural contribution, not cultural fit, and recognize that diversity in background and thought are essential to building high-impact teams.

We invest in growth and learning opportunities and encourage our people to never stop learning. We foster collaboration and believe in being recognized (and rewarded!) for hard work. We champion a healthy work-life balance. We’re kinder than necessary.

Together we build for the future by designing simple solutions for complex problems. And that’s why we’re the most loved and trusted name in security.

About the team:

Duo’s data science teams empower our colleagues and customers to improve security outcomes and make data-informed decisions. We support product development and prioritization, architect Duo’s data analysis environment, research and build the models and logic behind Duo Trust Monitor and risk-based authentication flows, coauthor impactful public reports, participate in the security and data science research communities, and more. We spend a fair bit of time on the deceptively difficult task of counting things.

As part of this group, the Algorithms Research team brings Data Science and Security expertise together to develop product features that use data to improve security and user experience. We are an applied research team, working collaboratively with Engineering and Product on a daily basis to create tangible customer impact. From large scale anomaly detection models to simple rule-based detectors, we discover and deliver algorithms that solve the problem at hand while also driving innovation.

As a Data Scientist on our Algorithms Research team, you will…

  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, and Engineers to develop and deploy algorithms that power Duo’s adaptive product capabilities. Some days you might be choosing thresholds for simple detection rules. Other days you might be experimenting with unsupervised anomaly detection at massive scale.

  • Combine empirical investigation and security domain knowledge to understand the current landscape of threats faced by Duo’s customers.

  • Represent a Data Science perspective during product development, helping teams appropriately prioritize data collection, feedback loops, and other prerequisites for future data work.

  • Identify when machine learning isn’t the best solution to a problem, and collaborate with appropriate stakeholders to pivot to a design or engineering based solution.

You should have...

  • A strong grounding in at least one of Security, Data Science, or Machine Learning, with some experience and substantial interest in the others.

  • Foundational knowledge of statistical and modeling techniques - you can reason about sampling and variance, evaluate model fit or predictive performance, and choose between modeling frameworks given problem, infrastructure, and data constraints.

  • Fluency in at least one data analysis and modeling language (like Python or R), plus at least some familiarity with Python specifically.

  • Experience delivering impactful research projects in an applied setting.

  • A focus on collaboration with Engineers, Designers, Product Managers and other stakeholders. You know how to translate between data science vocabulary and a variety of product, user, and stakeholder perspectives.

  • Excellent communication skills across multiple modalities, audiences, and contexts. We do a lot of our work through asynchronous messaging and documents.

  • High tolerance for ambiguity and an appreciation for negative results, balanced by an eye for delivering incremental value where possible. You value an effective solution over a fancy model.

Even better if you have...

  • Experience applying data science tools to unsupervised problems in the security domain.

  • Graduate-level expertise and/or formal education in statistics, data science, machine learning, computational sciences, or similar.

  • Software Engineering training or experience, and comfort working with the AWS ecosystem.

  • Experience working on a SaaS product.
