About WattTime
WattTime is a rare non-profit tech startup. We’re laser focused on helping people, companies, and policymakers who are working to drive down emissions multiply their good impact - and usually at no cost. We do this through several specific creative uses of extremely detailed emissions datasets. Founded by UC Berkeley researchers, we’re best known for inventing Automated Emissions Reduction (AER), a data-driven technique that over 100 million IoT devices now use to reduce fossil fuel use by automatically running on surplus clean/renewable energy. We also develop and share other techniques, like our Emissionality technology that more and more wind and solar farms are using to multiply their environmental impact. Today, WattTime is also the secretariat of the Climate TRACE coalition, a global team-up of nonprofits, tech companies, and universities working to use machine learning and remote sensing to provide open, transparent, independent monitoring of nearly every major individual source of GHG emissions worldwide. About the Role
WattTime’s Automated Emissions Reduction (AER) team is expanding in three big ways: geographic coverage, data sources, and multiple variants of our marginal emissions product. Our small team has made great strides and identified where our software needs to be more finely tuned. In this role, we are looking for someone to build the next edition of our data using in-depth knowledge of schema designs, testing, monitoring, data pipelines, and DAGs.
Responsibilities
- Build data structures and pipelines to support multiple transformations of emissions data
- Design and build new data stores to support our expansion, e.g. a weather data store
- Exemplify clean patterns for other engineers to rapidly prototype with new data sources
- Optimize data stores for both our emissions API and our data science workflows
- Collaborate with other software engineers to ingest and clean data for ML models
- Lead by example with good patterns that level up our data and software environment
Qualifications
The person hired for this position should be committed to driving environmental impact. All candidates should also have proven experience that includes:
- 5+ years of software experience with a focus on data
- Deep knowledge of databases with an eye toward production APIs and SLAs
- Significant experience writing clean Pythonic code or demonstrable ability to translate experience from another language
- Experience with orchestrating tasks as DAGs, e.g. AirFlow, Argo, or KubeFlow
- Flexible and willing to contribute to WattTime’s API, ML models, and product direction
- Collaborative, communicative, and respectful
- Ability to work effectively from a remote environment across regular U.S. work hours through tools like Slack, Zoom, GSuite, and others
- Willingness to travel to team collaborative sessions a few times a year
