Iggy 🌱

At Iggy our mission is to make knowledge about place easily accessible to data scientists, decision makers, and machines. Our vision is that anyone who wants to understand places in the world uses Iggy to do so.

Today we're in the first phase of this journey. We’re building a platform that makes it easy for data scientists and machine learning engineers to build new products and improve models with geospatial data. A year from now we expect to be scaling and strengthening our platform, providing more services, data, and models, and extending to new verticals. Thereafter we hope to extend our product beyond technical users.

Some engineering challenges you can help us solve in your first 6 months:

  • Data is messy and often requires a bunch of manual annotation before it’s ready to process and deliver to users. Can you help us build intelligent systems to scale these efforts?
  • We need to manage large amounts of geospatial data and deliver it to a web client for visualization. How do we do this in a way that is scalable for a public facing app?
  • Users want to experiment with Iggy computations (e.g. spatial aggregation) over samples of their data in the browser. How do we facilitate this in a fast, responsive way?
  • Customers want to upload their own geospatial data, explore it in various ways, combine it with iggy data, and compute new outputs. How would you enable this as an MVP?

About the Role

We’re growing our Engineering team and looking for data engineering expertise.

We’re looking for someone who has experience working in an early-stage company and who is experimental and loves to take on an ambitious challenge. You will be expected to be passionate about our audience - data scientists and ML engineers. You should be comfortable and confident sharing your perspective, goals, and results with the broader company as a core team member.

This role has an incredible opportunity for growth across technical, analytics, and product realms. As an early stage startup, we have more hypotheses than answers. But if you want to grow on multiple fronts, we’d love to chat.

This position is a full-time, benefits eligible position based anywhere in the United States. As a member of our team, you’ll also be eligible for meaningful employee equity.

What you’ll do

  • Work in close partnership with product engineering, developing data pipeline prototypes that will scale into production systems.
  • Maintain and scale our existing geospatial data pipelines that ingest, clean, and transform our data
  • Provide technical leadership on best data engineering practices to engineers, product managers, and other team members

You'll be joining a small, fun, mission-oriented and mature team. We're intentional about the products we build and the culture we create. We value curiosity, problem-solving, kindness and diversity. We love what we do for work, and we do other things too: our founder is an avid rock climber, traveler, and cheese fanatic. Other team members cook and garden, play video games, run, and brew beer. We value who you are outside/beyond work and are excited to support you in your passions.

Please read our diversity statement.

What we’re looking for

  • Solid foundation in data engineering. You’ve built scalable, automated pipelines to ingest and transform large volumes of both structured and unstructured data.
  • Expert knowledge of Python & SQL
  • Understanding and familiarity with a variety of query engines like warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery), federated query engines (Presto, Athena, Hive), NoSQL (MongoDB, DynamoDB, ElasticSearch), etc.
  • Experience working with cloud infrastructure, AWS, GCP, Azure, etc.
  • We are curious people, and expect you to be curious too. Exposure to geospatial data is a bonus, but a base level of curiosity about it would go a long way.
  • You are enthusiastic about continuing your track record of leading diverse engineering teams and providing mentorship to team members
  • Excellent written communication and the ability to communicate technical concepts and decisions to stakeholders from various functions
  • Desire to have impact across the product and understand customers so you build for them.
  • Bonus if you have experience with:
    • API structure
    • Data Visualization

We'd love to see a side project/portfolio or even better, a blog post from any potential candidates!

Benefits 🎁

We offer a robust package of benefits that includes:

  • Remote First Company - work from where you want to live (in the US)!
  • 100% Company-paid premiums for medical, dental and vision
  • 50% Company-paid premiums for dependents
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Employer-paid Life Insurance and AD&D Benefits
