About Iggy 🌱

Iggy is the first developer toolkit that simplifies access to complex location data. Founded by an Ex-Airbnb data scientist (Lindsay) and cartographer (Zack), we empower companies to build innovative products and models.

We are a remote WFH team, with team members on the East and West Coasts, from Portland OR, Berkeley and SF, CA, and Seattle, WA to Philadelphia, PA, St. Pete, FL and Cambridge MA. As a remote first team, we will always offer first-class support for remote team members.

We’re a seed-stage startup backed by some amazing institutional investors including First Round Capital and Amplify, an incredible micro VC Brianne Kimmel/WLV, the Airbnb Alumni Investment Syndicate AirAngels, as well as founders from Plaid, Looker and Instacart and other high value-add investors.

You'll be joining a small, fun, mission-oriented and mature team. We're intentional about the products we build and the culture we create. We value creativity, grit, curiosity, kindness and diversity. We love what we do for work, and we do other things too: one of our founders has sailed around the world and is in a rock band, another is an avid rock climber, traveler, and cheese fanatic. We value who you are outside/beyond work and are excited to support you in your passions.

Please read our diversity statementhere.

About the Role

We are looking for a spatial data scientist who can build data products to deliver location-based insights to our users. In this role, you will work with the Product team to understand how location-based insights can be helpful in various use cases, and build indices and other data science products to empower our customers to leverage their location data. Some examples might include walkability indices, environmental health risk, noise level predictions, etc. The ability to independently build novel and valuable datasets from disparate and disconnected sources is more important than deep geospatial knowledge.

We’re looking for someone with the confidence to move quickly and make big decisions, the humility to own mistakes you make along the way, and the resilience to weather the ups and downs of a category-defining startup.

You will have wide latitude on architectural decisions and implementation. You will be a critical team member on our journey from 0-1, with massive impact.

Responsibilities & Duties✅

Build and deploy location intelligence models or indices that help our users get the most out of their location data

Work with the Product team to understand customer needs and use cases, and prioritize data products that drive use of our platform

Think about how we measure and communicate data quality to our users and internally, and capture the necessary metrics

Determine additional data sources that are necessary in your analyses and models, and assist with their acquisition and ingest

Stay up to speed with the worlds of commercial and academic spatial data science, and keep the rest of the team up to date on developments that are relevant to Iggy

About You

You are a great candidate for this role if you:

Know where to start looking for the types of geographic data you need for your analyses. The NOAA, ACS, Census Bureau, and USGS websites (or another country's equivalents) have been in your bookmark tab at some point in time. You've analyzed various geospatial data sources and have an opinion about which is best suited to a given Iggy product.

Feel comfortable with diving into the details of the data platform that we are building to support your work. It is a work in progress. You'll be vocal in the internal discussion about how to make it better.

Have a solid enough understanding of GIS fundamentals to know when to use geographic or projected coordinates, and how to convert between the two. You have experience working with geospatial data formats (raster, vector, cloud, flat files)

Have a firm grounding in statistics or ML

Are excited to communicate your work through blogs and other publications.

Have strong knowledge of Python, bonus points for experience with orchestration frameworks

Are comfortable with standard geospatial libraries such as rasterio, fiona, shapely, geopandas

Experience developing APIs and supporting spatial databases

Thrive when given latitude to be creative but stay grounded, humble, and love being a part of a team

Great at working with cross-functional teams

Execute quickly

Excellent communication and the ability to communicate technical concepts and decisions to stakeholders

We'd love to see a side project/portfolio or even better, a blog post from any potential candidates!
