Position Description
The Senior Data Scientist will support the ideation and growth of the data science practice, including process, infrastructure, and tooling decisions. They will lead and execute deep-dive diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics initiatives to support business decisions and strategic planning. The role requires extensive professional programming experience and demonstrated ability to analyze data and build and deploy AI models. Beyond strong technical aptitude, the Senior Data Scientist will engage with internal stakeholders and mentor data science professionals.
Strategy & Planning
- Create and iterate repeatable, reusable processes and scalable data systems that address technical and deployment challenges.
- Author white papers for technical and non-technical audiences to inspire and create a dialog with stakeholders around the value of data science and AI.
- Demonstrate high creativity when developing solutions to improve business processes using advanced analytical methods.
- Contribute to strategic planning for broader technology and infrastructure modernization initiative for Advancement at Harvard.
Service Delivery
- Design and build end-to-end AI solutions that will address business process needs and aid in achieving strategic goals.
- Manage and execute data science projects from start to finish, including business engagement, data wrangling, analysis, and modeling.
- Work cross-functionally with business operations partners and the BI development team.
- Ensure project delivery and continued success from initial development to business support and enhancements.
- Generate working datasets and configurations to accelerate response rates to requested work from the developing data science team.
- Formulate data-driven solutions to expressed and unexpressed business opportunities and communicate compelling stories.
- Create and implement tools and processes to aid advanced analytics work from the wider team.
- Ensures the team develops consistent practices for documentation and handoff of newly created processes.
Leadership
- Mentor and guide developing data science team members on best practices for process and solution.
- Coach analysts and data scientists on coding, use of Python packages, deployment, and monitoring.
- Grow capabilities around automation by enhancing data architecture and pipelines in close collaboration with reporting, BI, and Data Solutions teams.
- Drive a culture of innovation through upskilling, experimentation, and continuous improvement.
- Act as an AI thought leader, including presentations, reports, and creation of white papers to inspire and create dialog for future projects.
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum of seven years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Experience in data science, IT, or software development, including data engineering and advanced analytics work
- Experienced with full-stack development of data science solutions in a high-security environment
- Fluent in Python packages for Data Science, such as NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, SciPy, Scikit-learn, PyTorch, Tensorflow, Keras, etc.
- Advanced visualization and data storytelling skills
- Must have an even disposition and be able to deal effectively and politely with all people from all types of backgrounds and experience
- Ability to work within a team-oriented environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Must be collaborative, conscientious, and results-oriented
- Involvement in non-profits or higher-ed Advancement a plus
Certificates and Licenses
- Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred
Working Conditions
- For those interested in remote work, this position can be performed as fully remote. AA&D does require visits to Cambridge for on or around campus-based engagements required by AA&D leadership, your team or unit, such as reunion activities, retreats, etc. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Additional details will be discussed during the interview process.
Additional Information
This position requires a 3 month orientation and review period.
