Senior Engineering Manager: Core ML Systems

About You

Consider applying to this role if you’re a passionate, first-principles, Engineering Leader whose career has found them leading efforts that directly support Machine Learning and Data Science teams in production environments. ML is at the very core of what we do & we come by it naturally.

So you’re “that type” of leader? Then you really should consider applying if you’ve found yourself:

Justifying “Why ML matters” to your customers or leadership

Spending countless hours explaining to your leadership team how you can’t just “toss in some AI”

You’re tired of explaining to your (fourth!) recruiting partner how “machine learning ≠ fancy reporting”

Lastly, you should DEFINITELY apply if:

You want what you (and your team) do to have a massive & positive impact on the people who use what you create

You want to lead a team of highly-capable & world-class individuals from diverse backgrounds who are all dedicated to achieving the same mission

You think a culture of listening to customers empowers the next generation of successes

About the Role & Team

As the Senior Engineering Manager for our central “Core Detection” team, you and your team are ultimately responsible for the main product and capabilities at the heart of Abnormal Security. The systems you help create are the heart of determining whether user behavior is an attack, a scam, legitimate business communication, or just something out of the ordinary.

We protect our customers against nefarious adversaries who are constantly evolving their techniques and tactics to outwit and undermine the traditional approaches to Security. That’s what makes our novel behavioral-based approach so…Abnormal.

The team you lead here will own the core set of ML models and the critical detection control layer which orchestrates across these models, rules, and algorithms to drive an informed decision. The team is also responsible for an ML Training Platform that enables automatically retraining and deploying our models to constantly adapt with the evolving threat landscape.

As such, we're looking for a leader whose core focus has been on facilitating the growth and success of ML-adjacent, ML-in-production-deployed, software engineering teams. The team is focused on production and wouldn't be great for someone focused on "research."

Qualifications:

5+ years of professional experience as a hands-on engineer (either MLE or SWE) building data-oriented products and/or ML systems/products

2+ years of managing end-to-end, production, ML solutions or ML-adjacent Software Engineering teams

Experience with real-time, online, and/or high-throughput & low-latency distributed systems

Ability to work with cross-functional teams & customers to establish requirements and ensure their downstream clarity

Ability to create and execute on hiring plans to meet roadmap deliverables and budgetary requirements

Ability to establish and maintain repeatable processes to streamline design docs, roadmap planning, and overall goal tracking and attainment.

Ability to identify potential technical roadblocks and help provide proven solutions to avoid/mitigate

Experience in “security” is not required but we welcome those passionate about Fraud, Security, Safety, or similar domains. Equally common to the team are backgrounds rooted in Rank & Recommendation, Search, Ad Tech, and others.

Our Values

Far from gathering dust in some forgotten corner, our values serve as our operating principles for every team member. We clearly define what values drive us, so our entire team works from the same foundation and understanding. From the CEO to the interns, all of us are held accountable to our VOICE Framework.

Our Benefits

Taking care of our team goes beyond the office. Our compensation and benefits philosophy is designed to put attract, motivate, and retain top talent:

Compensation targeted to the 75th percentile (for both base salary and equity)
If we want top performers to join and stay with us, we need to pay accordingly. We pay at the 75th percentile (for both base salary and equity) of our competitive market, and we benchmark to higher cost of living cities (such as San Francisco and New York) no matter where our team members live. We standardize our pay, meaning we pay for the role and level, not for any particular individual’s ability to interview or negotiate well.

Equity is an important part of our total comp strategy
When the company does well, we all do well. Equity is an important and exciting part of our total compensation strategy as a pre-IPO startup. We’re guided by the belief our team members should share in the financial success of our company and grant equity accordingly.

Unlimited PTO
All regular salaried team members enjoy unlimited PTO. We want team members to grow with us and a big part of that is making sure our team has the opportunity to rest and recharge. We also observe 12 holidays every year.

100% of healthcare premium costs covered
Taking care of our team goes beyond the office. We cover 100% of employee health care premium costs. If adding dependents, we contribute 75% of the health care premium cost, so you can be sure that you and your family are in the best possible health.

Remote-first
Operating as a remote-first company means we get to work with talented folks, no matter where they live. We prioritize a balance of deep focus time with Zoom meetings, and regular in-person events.

As a fast growing startup, we continuously review, improve, and personalize our benefits offerings based on the team’s input. Don’t see something that’s important to you? Let us know!
