Job Description

 

At The New York Times, we take data seriously and use it to make business decisions, improve the quality of our journalism, and provide the best possible experience to our readers. To make this happen, we are building the next generation of our Data Platform to support the growing number of data consumers and their use cases, while addressing the challenges of data governance and user privacy at scale.

The Data Governance Engineering team is responsible for implementing the systems supporting the three main pillars in Data Governance–User Privacy, Data Reliability, and Data Discovery. Our mission is to provide our internal data users with an ecosystem where they can easily find, understand, and work with quality data, complying with user privacy regulations such as GDPR and CCPA. 

As an engineer on the team, you will:

  • Build and maintain high-performance, fault-tolerant, secure, and scalable systems

  • Architect, implement, test, release, and support new functionalities

  • Build great products to power The Times’ Technology and Data teams

  • Partner with other teams to work on things together

  • Engage with internal data users to understand their pain points, observe patterns, and identify opportunities for improvements

Required Skills & Experience

  • Good communication and team collaboration skills

  • Experience with Python

  • Experience with agile principles and engineering practices, such as test driven development and continuous integration

  • Familiarity with the software development lifecycle

  • Familiarity with deploying and monitoring systems using cloud infrastructure (GCP or AWS) 

  • Familiarity with relational and/or NoSQL database technology, and basic principles of how to choose between them

  • BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent engineering experience

Bonus Points

  • Experience with system observability tools such as Datadog, SumoLogic, and Monte Carlo

  • Experience with one or more of the following technologies:

    • Pub/Sub and/or Kafka

    • Kubernetes

    • BigQuery

    • Airflow (Google Cloud Composer)

    • Cloud storage: S3, GCS

    • React

    • Flask

  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code using Terraform

  • Knowledge of distributed systems principles (consistency and availability, durability, reliability, fault-tolerance)

This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
