At Chewy, data drives all of our decision making, so Chewy is looking for a Staff Data Warehouse Engineer to join our IT Enterprise Data Services Team based in Boston, MA. The ideal candidate will be a well rounded technologist with a passion for building innovative business solutions with big data and Java technologies. Experience delivering big data solutions – from system setup to development to business solution delivery – is critical. Programming experience is also paramount. Big data technologies are constantly evolving. The Enterprise Data Services should be keeping up with the latest developments and should be able to connect technical capability with business need.

What you'll do:

  • Define and shape the overall data strategies/Roadmap and their impact on applications and system architecture.
  • Hiring, training, mentoring and growing new talent will be a major part of your job as Chewy is growing all teams at a record pace
  • Drive innovation through rapid prototyping and iterative development
  • Conduct design & code reviews and raise the bar on engineering rigor and standards
  • Set standards and guidelines for evolving development practices. Drive the focus on scalability, resiliency, high availability and performance of application
  • Evangelize tools, stack and the use of data to drive decision making across the company and at different levels
  • Partner with engineering teams to optimize data architecture and technical implementations
  • Work in an agile development environment, collaborating with application development, architecture teams, engineering and product managers
  • Effectively communicate with and influence key stakeholder across the enterprise, at all levels of the organization
  • Contribute to intellectual property through patents

What you'll need:

  • 10+ years of experience in data warehousing/Big data design, data integration, data engineering, architecture, analytics engineering or related field
  • 10+ years of experience leading and developing large scale projects and initiatives
  • Strong working knowledge of modern data stack:
    • Cloud Data Warehouse such as Snowflake, Redshift or BigQuery
    • SQL expertise and the ability to work with many different database types. Vertica, Snowflake, Postgres, SQL Server, and others as required
    • ETL/ELT
    • Data replication and data streaming
  • Fluent in SQL and strong knowledge/proven expertise with at least one modern programming language such as Python, Java or object oriented programming
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse, talented team
  • Ability to balance your time between being a hands-on engineer writing code, creating Framework structure for team or debugging tricky issues and define and execute the company’s data strategy
  • Knowledge of professional software and engineering practices for the full software development life cycle including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • Experience with designing, building and deploying scalable, high performing, fault-tolerant, highly available systems for large enterprises
  • Strong background with modern tools and environments (e.g., JSON 3.0 API spec, web services, version control systems, bug/issue tracking tools)
  • Strong expert experience in cloud native AWS technology stack (EMR, Kinesis, Lambda, API Gateways, etc..) and service-oriented architecture
  • Experience with cloud & orchestration technologies (AWS Services, Terraform, Ansible, etc.)
  • Experience in communicating software product features, technical designs & product strategy with users, other technical teams, and senior management
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong analytical skills, and ability to deal with ambiguity in a rapidly evolving business environment
  • Have deep domain knowledge in the area of retail e-commerce
  • Masters in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent experience
  • Position may require travel

Bonus:

    • Experience building platform (like SageMaker) that can host ML applications, Data Science, etc…
    • Experience in realtime or near-realtime analytics
    • Experience with Scrum or other agile methodologies
    • Experience taking a project from inception through launch. Includes influencing the vision, communicating with leadership, stakeholders, and technical teams to disambiguate requirements, describe software product features, and produce technical design documents
    • Deep experience in one or more public cloud offerings (AWS, Azure, GCP)
    • Experience with business intelligence platforms (e.g. Tableau, etc.)
