Analyst
Flexible Location
TNTP is seeking full-time Analysts for our Consulting, Learning, Impact and Design (LID), and Public Affairs Divisions. These positions are based in a home office anywhere in the U.S. and are available immediately. The position requires light travel; the average TNTP Analyst travels a few times a year, but travel up to 20% annually is possible.
Who We Are
A national nonprofit founded by teachers, TNTP believes our nation’s public schools can offer all children an excellent education. Today we’re a diverse team from a wide range of fields, united by a fierce commitment to helping school systems end educational inequality. We work at every level of the public education system to attract and train talented teachers and school leaders, ensure rigorous and engaging classrooms, and create environments that prioritize great teaching and accelerate student learning.
What You’ll Do
As an Analyst, you’ll inform the direction of our projects and our organization by drawing insights from data to identify trends, needs, and opportunities. You’ll analyze results to determine what’s working and what needs to change. An Analyst’s day-to-day work changes over time, based on the stage of each engagement and the differences between projects and teams. There’s not a single typical “day in the life,” which keeps things fresh. Here are some examples of what our Analysts do:
Clean, merge, and analyze a school district’s employee rosters to reveal trends in transitions between schools
Design, launch, and analyze surveys of stakeholder groups (including teachers, administrators, and students)
Use R to clean and analyze assignment quality data and create a presentation to support a school district tracking progress towards their goal of providing access to grade-appropriate assignments
Advise clients and/or TNTP leadership on how we can set up an initiative such that, when it ends, we’ll have the data we need to evaluate its success
Analyze fundraising or business development data to inform our organizational growth strategy
Participate in TNTP’s data team, including reviewing colleagues’ analysis code, giving feedback, and sharing breakthroughs
Engage in other aspects of TNTP’s tremendously varied work: conduct a school visit, debate the role of teacher training in developing more culturally-responsive classrooms, or discuss your favorite podcast or TV show around our virtual watercooler
What You Bring
We are looking for amazing people who have diverse backgrounds and experiences, are inspired by our mission and are highly motivated to change children’s lives through education. You’ll be right at home here if you learn from failure and overcome adversity, cultivate strong relationships, understand the power of diversity, advocate for equity, aspire to lead through inclusion, and push yourself, your work and the people around you to the next level.
We expect our Analysts to bring:
A passion for getting better at analysis. It’s rare that anyone comes in with across-the-board mastery, and you should plan on intentionally growing your skills while here to fill out your toolkit. You know a programming language and have taught yourself an analysis technique.
Superlative attention to detail. Our work, and our clients’ actions, rest on the bedrock of our analysts’ results. We’ll count on you to surface and resolve issues along the way, as the integrity of your final product must be unquestionable.
A healthy sense of skepticism… You’ll evaluate the relative merits of different approaches, hold the line on what we can conclude when results are mixed or unclear, and ensure your time is being spent in the right places.
… balanced by practical optimism. We move quickly. In our work, it’s often the case that even limited findings represent an improvement, and our analysts must be comfortable with ambiguity.
An ability to develop and deliver crisp, clean messages. Whether in writing or on the phone, your communications are clear, articulate and concise. You understand your audience and can explain complex information and data to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences.
Build relationships. You’ll regularly partner with internal and external clients. You have an ability to connect and build relationships with diverse communities. Bilingual abilities are a plus.
Qualifications
Good data sense / numeracy: you notice when the Ns don’t look right and realize the implications of using a weighted mean versus a straight average of subgroup averages.
You should have some proficiency with these technical skills, although the right candidate can pick up the others on the job:
Writing code to analyze data. We require the use of R, but recognize that you may currently code in Stata, SAS, SQL, SPSS, Python - or even Excel. We can build your capacity to use R if you’re comfortable with programming in another language and are driven to learn new analysis techniques and technology.
Working reproducibly (so that colleagues can follow and extend your work)
Performing and interpreting fundamental statistical analyses (correlation, linear regression)
Experience with Salesforce reporting is preferred for some of our Analyst roles
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Ability to work efficiently amidst competing priorities.
Comfort with receiving and sharing constructive feedback.
Curiosity about topics in K-12 education. It helps if you have a background in education (preferred). It’s okay if you don’t, but you should be excited to quickly immerse yourself (as we find it’s hard to do good analysis without understanding the context).
