Business Intelligence Engineer, Boston, MA or Remote

Ellevation is looking for an experienced, action-oriented Business Intelligence Engineer, who is highly motivated to learn and grow and is passionate about data enablement in support of driving business decisions. The ideal candidate is a driven engineer who has hands-on experience with ETL tools, Data warehouses and knowledge of data modeling to help us improve our analytics infrastructure and operations to set us up to grow our analytics capabilities from descriptive analytics to diagnostic analytics.

As a Business Intelligence Engineer, you will be part of the FinOps group's work towards improving the data infrastructure and work cross-functionally to help inform and monitor strategy for Sales, Revenue, Marketing, Partner (Customer) Success, and Engineering functions.

Responsibilities

Understand business needs to gather, analyze, interpret, and communicate data insights that inform stakeholders at all levels to make data-informed decisions.

Work towards rebuilding the data model to improve, simplify, and optimize data model in the data warehouse to support the analytical data needs and make it scalable.

Maintain data integrity across systems and work towards improving data quality across systems.

Implement staging, transformation, and QA of data to improve reliability of data.

Build APIs and implement new pipelines to analyze data from new data sources.

Build, maintain, and monitor a comprehensive set of metrics and KPIs to measure the health and success of various business functions across organizations.

Manage and track end-user requests and troubleshoot data issues.

Design, develop, deploy, and maintain high-quality, scalable solutions across the entire data lifecycle, from raw data to analytics ready data sets enabling visualization to build powerful insights & analytics.

Profile data assets for completeness and validity, and build automated SQL scripts to assess completeness, validity, and other data metrics for the data warehouse.

Administration of BI Platform. Maintain high-quality documentation on the business systems and BI solutions to support Data Governance.

Within 1 month, you will:

Onboard and learn about Ellevation, and the work we do to improve outcomes for EL students.

Develop relationships across the Finance and Operations team.

Meet with various departments to understand their business process, corresponding business systems/data sources, and metrics.

Get hands-on with our BI Platform.

Within 3 months, you will:

Develop a solid understanding of the data landscape at Ellevation Education supported by the FinOps team.

Get familiarized with KPIs, and metrics currently used by various business functions.

Gather information regarding critical data assets and start working on the prototype for building dimensions for a critical data asset identified.

Within 6 months, you will:

Develop a solid understanding of architecture, pipelines, and data model improvements and action plan to make it scalable.

Work towards mitigating data model issues by productionalizing the dimension, identifying best practices for staging and QA of the data asset identified for prototype.

Develop a solid understanding of reports and dashboards currently built and used across the organization and work on ad-hoc data requests.

Troubleshoot and maintain data integrity issues across systems.

Start working on APIs and implement new pipelines to analyze data from new data sources identified or requested by business.

Within 12 months, you will:

Implement staging and QA for critical data assets identified.

Work towards rebuilding the data model for critical data assets to make data reliable and work towards continuously improving architecture to make it scalable.

Support Data Governance initiatives.

Automate monitoring and maintaining data integrity across systems.

Build and maintain all the reports and dashboards in the BI platform.

Work on strategic projects and Business Analytics initiatives to inform business decisions.

Manage administration of the BI Platform.

About You

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, MIS or related field

3+ years of prior experience building data warehouses, dimensional models, business intelligence, and analytic solutions.

Strong SQL writing skills and understanding of data model, architecture, ETL processes and tools.

Knowledge and experience with scripting languages – JavaScript, Python, R

Understanding of API concepts specifically around reading and writing data using RESTful APIs. Reading data in various formats.

Knowledge of data warehousing and dimensional data modeling and experience working in a cloud data warehouse is required.

Hands-on Experience with connecting and querying to at least one of the platforms – Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS is required.

Good Excel skills are required. Experience with Sisense, Tableau, Power BI, or a similar BI Platform is required.

Experience working with AWS technologies – Redshift, S3, EC2, Data-pipelines, Lambda, etc. is a plus.

Good verbal and written communication skills and ability to engage effectively at all levels of the organization, with both technical and non-technical audiences.
