The Role: Data Architect

Location: Remote 

About This Role:

Hazel’s Data Architect is responsible for the overall design, operations, standards, and quality of our data infrastructure, including data pipelines, lake/warehouse design, and data services in support of downstream data consumers. This is a critical role, supporting Hazel’s growing demand for data, analysis, and insights in all areas of the business. This role serves as the connection between the data infrastructure, product, engineering, IT, and analytics teams. The successful candidate will build and operate new data sources, continuously rev existing data lake/warehouse design and ops, guide data modeling efforts for new and existing projects and products, and manage data ingress and egress between Hazel’s teams, clients, partners, and vendors. The ideal candidate will have experience with healthcare data (both clinical and claims-based).

What You'll Do:

  • Through your discovery process of Hazel’s current data infrastructure, culture, and critical stakeholders, author a data roadmap, inclusive of sources, integrations, tools, processes, and standards.
  • Architect and implement a data platform to support current organizational initiatives, while anticipating future needs and evolving the data platform to meet Hazel’s long-term goals.
  • Collaborate with upstream and downstream stakeholders to implement architectural and system level processes necessary to build and maintain consistent data quality and governance.
  • Using your knowledge of data tools, modeling techniques, best practices, and quality processes, extract, combine, and rationalize data from various heterogeneous data sources into a unified data warehouse to serve the needs of Hazel’s business.
  • Design, implement, and operate a data platform that supports standardized reporting, analytics dashboards, and ad-hoc access to Hazel’s growing datasets and insights.
  • Build and maintain data quality  and anomaly detection best practices and tools.
  • Lead ETL, ELT, and reverse-ETL initiatives including data analysis, source-target mapping, data profiling, change data capture, QA testing, and performance tuning.
  • Invest in documentation of data infrastructure design, mapping, flow, and lineage.
  • Prioritize building solutions that are automated, scalable, and maintainable.

Background:

  • Bachelors in Computer Science, related degree, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 7+ years of data-focused work experience within a complex, dynamic environment.
  • 5+ years of experience in a Data Architect (or equivalent) role.
  • Experience building and operating highly available, distributed systems of data extraction, ingestion, and processing of large data sets.
  • Strong working knowledge of the various data management concepts and technologies (relational, columnar, noSQL, streaming, graph, etc.) and how/when to incorporate them into your overall architecture.
  • Experience with enterprise data warehouse design patterns and technology.
  • Experience with data migration tools and techniques.
  • Experience in business intelligence development across a variety of applications (OLTP, OLAP and DSS).
  • Experience with ELT, ETL, and Reverse ETL tools (such as Airflow, FiveTran, Grouperoo, etc.) .
  • Working knowledge of Git, dbt, or similar collaborative code management software.
  • Experience delivering self-service analytics and driving business adoption including training and literacy is preferred
  • Demonstrated project management skills to enable and ensure projects are delivered in service of the business strategy and requirements
  • Maintained your knowledge of SQL’s standard language classes (DML,  DDL, DCL, and TCL), Stored Procedures, Indexes, user defined functions, and related data query and management technology.

Bonus Points For: 

  • Masters in Computer Science, related degree, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience in healthcare and/or education, with knowledge of related compliance, governance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with Salesforce or other CRM systems and related constituent data models preferred.
  • Healthcare specific data acquisition, ingestion, processing, and analytics.
  • Education specific data acquisition, ingestion, processing, and analytics.
  • Health informatics experience (knowledge of, taxonomies, terminologies, and code sets).
  • Experience with healthcare claims data, formats, and analysis.
