The Data Team at Stack Overflow builds and maintains the data processing and analytic pipelines that democratize access to data and Machine Learning Models across our organization.
In this role, you’ll be leading initiatives on the Data Team that accelerates a proper balance of our 3 core customers: Data Producers, Data Consumers, and Legal compliance. Each of our customers have specific needs that you will need to help address.
Our Data Producers are typically Software Engineers creating our main website, Stackoverflow.com. You will need to work with our SWE leaders to understand what components of their application they are working on, what data is most valuable to collect, what data is straightforward to collect, and follow up with prioritization efforts to ensure they create the data in a timely fashion.
Data Consumers are typically Product Managers and Analysts that want to find insights into the performance of our products or leverage ML Models that are created by our Data Science Team. You will need to work with our Product leaders to help them collect the data they truly need to drive the insights they are looking for. You will need to coordinate with the Data Scientists and the Data Engineers on the Data Team to build the Machine Learning models that best achieve the results the Product team needs
Legal representatives are typically the Legal team, InfoSec team, and our Community Management team that owns the proper use of the data at StackOverflow. You will need to work with these teams to help them understand how we are collecting data, what we want to do with the data, and coordinate with the Engineering teams to adjust our solutions to align with the requirements from the Legal, InfoSec, and Community Management teams.
Our preferred candidate is familiar with stakeholder engagement, event data delivery, and data science model building.
Here’s what you can expect during the first year:
- First Month: get on-boarded and meet the Data Platform and Data Science teams that you will be working with. Meet the Product, Engineering, Legal, Infosec, and Community Management teams that you will be supporting. Get acquainted with our main products: Stackoverflow.com, StackExchange.com, and StackOverflowteams.com
- First 3 months: Understand the current Data Ingestion process and its limitations. Understand the key initiatives our Data Teams are a part of. Document and make recommendations on enhancing the working model on at least 1 initiative.
- First 9 months: Take a leadership role in driving how our data experts are interacting with our key customers. You’re involved in defining long-term strategy in what gets built and are advocating for the best way to enable our customers by creating robust processes.
Skills and Requirements
We expect to see:
- 4+ years in stakeholder management
- Experience in one of the following: web applications, data mining, cloud infrastructure
- Experience listening to many different stakeholders and prioritizing feedback
- Exceptional communication skills, follows up with stakeholders and team members, and takes initiative to anticipate and solve problems
- Excellent spec-writing skills with a clear ability to break down complex problems into smaller, manageable pieces
- Familiarity with scrum/agile methodologies
- Self-motivating, self-directing, and a great communicator (written and oral). You thrive in an environment that grants you a lot of autonomy to explore creative solutions.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, related engineering degree or equivalent experience is a plus
- Experience working with Language Models is a plus
