About Stack Overflow

Stack Overflow empowers the world to develop technology through collective knowledge. More than 100 million people visit Stack Overflow every month, making it one of the most-visited websites in the world.

Best known for its public platform, Stack Overflow helps people find the answers they need, when they need them. That includes serving up relevant technologies to the community through Stack Overflow Advertising, providing direct access to technology-specific subject matter experts with Collectives™, sharing more about companies as future employers, and helping teams scale with its market-leading knowledge sharing and collaboration platform, Stack Overflow for Teams.

Stack Overflow exists to serve developers and technologists - with over 17 million question and answer pairs, the site has been visited over 12 billion times in the past decade. As a Senior Data Analyst on our team, you'll have a major impact on how we build products by creating insightful, actionable user insights to guide our strategy and execution. Some recent projects we've been working on include:

  • Creating an inclusive and engaging platform for the global community of developers and technologists, while modernizing our interface and user experience
  • Collectives™ on Stack Overflow, our newest product offering focused on bringing together interested people and a range of relevant content around a specific domain or topic
  • Growing our products, Stack Overflow for Teams and for Enterprise, which give organizations a private, secure home for their team's questions and answers.

You'll be joining the newly formed Product Innovation organization, which is responsible for developing and evaluating the pipeline of new products in the Stack Overflow product portfolio. This includes all our public-facing sites across Stack Overflow and the Stack Exchange network, Stack Overflow for teams, our commercialization efforts, such as advertising, sponsorships, and partnerships, and new products that don’t yet exist today! The company already has an established data analyst function and a strong product development process that pays careful attention to user needs. You'll have the opportunity to further craft the data analysis process for new products at Stack Overflow.

You'll work with a wide variety of people here at Stack; everyone from product managers and designers, to community managers, product marketers and product research. You'll help your team understand the unmet needs of our clients and users, and evangelize these insights to inform our product strategy and new product development to make sure we are solving real problems for both users and customers.

As a Senior Data Analyst, Innovation you will become a go to expert of the data behind Product Innovation and how it ties to our business objectives. You'll partner closely with key stakeholders throughout the product, marketing and engineering organizations to deliver key insights and strategic input that ensures Stack Overflow’s products remain the most trusted and innovative knowledge sharing product in the world, and enable Stack to 10x revenue over the next five years. You will do this by empowering the Innovation team with the right datasets and insights to evaluate potential long-term investments in new products and potential innovations. Critical to this role is an ability to turn business requests into technical requirements, experience analyzing large datasets and translating it into compelling business stories, and above all a passion for testing and creating world class experiences at scale.

What you'll do:

  • Develop a deep expertise of the entire Stack Overflow product portfolio and the data ecosystem that supports these products.
  • Regularly meet with business stakeholders from product, engineering, marketing, and other groups across the business to discuss ongoing initiatives, present analyses, and plan future initiatives.
  • Analyze every step of the user's journey through new and existing products, answering business questions while also keeping a vigilant eye for new and compelling observations to bring back to the business.
  • Conduct exploratory analysis to inform the product innovation roadmap and evaluate opportunities for new product development
  • Collaborate on analysis of current programmatic beta initiatives and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Partner with business and product leaders to define and iterate on the use of the most high-leverage KPIs across products and the organization
  • Discuss data "blind spots" and enhancement requests with business partners, and brainstorm solutions. Subsequently scope the necessary work and set proper expectations on when solutions can be delivered based on priority and effort.
  • Collaborate with other analysts throughout the business to ensure data is consistent and reliable, proactively identifying issues and proactively participating in resolution where needed.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, UX Designers and User Researchers to identify and develop new products that optimize for desired outcomes.
  • Prepare and deliver business requirement reviews to management regarding progress and blockers.

What we need to see:

  • 5+ years in an analyst/specialist role working with large datasets, at least some of which were related to user behaviors with digital products (new product development and/or growth and optimization experience a major plus)
  • 3+ years experience with SQL, Excel, Power BI and ETL systems, using databases to summarize data and answer business questions.
  • Experience marrying financial performance and product outcomes, and/or multiple data sets to surface insights and size potential growth opportunities
  • Experience applying statistical and quantitative analysis to plan, perform, measure, and interpret tests related to customer outcomes and experiences
  • Expertise building dashboards and reporting for stakeholders, including actionable detailed reports for front line stakeholders, and high level reporting to help drive decision making at the executive level.
  • An extensive track record of successful cross functional project experience and an innate ability to develop strong partnerships with peers throughout the organization.
  • A natural ability to "think of your feet" and problem solve autonomously. Motivated to work through ambiguity and overcome challenges.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, turning complex data analysis into actionable business insights that non technical stakeholders can interpret.
  • A proven track record of scoping and delivering solutions on time and to specifications.
  • Experience with Amplitude, Segment, Google Data Studio, and/or Google Ad Words a plus
  • Experience applying agile methodologies to customer experience development cycles a plus
  • Experience working at companies or with datasets involving community or network engagement at scale is a plus.
