The Opportunity

We are looking for a senior engineering manager focused on data that is passionate about education and leveraging data to help drive continuous improvements in our education system.  You will collaborate with the data science, engineering, product, and design teams to determine what the data engineering needs of the initiative are and make sure that our data engineering team fills those needs.  As a part of the education team you will support multiple product efforts, including the development, assessment, and improvement of the Summit Learning Platform and our Along Program.

Our education team is responsible for improving how:

• Teachers facilitate personalized projects where students can build and demonstrate learning and skill growth.
• Students work through content and assessments.
• Teachers individualize instruction using real-time data to keep students appropriately challenged and highly engaged with the projects
• Students work with teacher mentors to build trusting relationships which support their development.

Your work will be used by teachers and students who use the Summit Learning Platform.  This platform helps teachers provide highly personalized education to their students by assigning differentiated instruction and projects to students to maximize the speed and quality of their learning.  Data from students is used to help make these decisions and empower teachers.  

You will

• Manage a data engineering team that will empower data-informed decision making in the education initiative -- understand product, growth & engagement; identify areas of opportunity; and positively impact students and the education system.
• Grow the team significantly through hiring and career development
• Ensure that the data used by the broader team is effectively collected, organized, documented, and available in ways that are reliable and easy to use.
• Directly maintain the product by owning key platform embedded dashboards used by teachers and school leaders.
• Work with the trust and security teams to ensure that security and privacy controls over the data warehouse are state of the art.
• Build data infrastructure to support the data scientists delivery of analysis to inform product decision making.
• Partner with stakeholders across the team to understand the goals of developing new and existing projects, refine data strategy, and own end-to-end execution.
• Help assess and fulfill the data engineering needs of our key partner organization, Gradient Learning.
• Work with central data and infra to scale systems and process (when appropriate) across more of CZI and ensure the data engineers are getting proper support.

You have

• Experience leading, managing, and growing a team of engineers/data engineers who support data scientists, product analysts, and product users.
• Comprehensive knowledge of modern data science and product/visualization analytics tools and techniques with excellent coding skills.
• Deep knowledge of building out ETL to create data warehouses, Data/Dimensional modeling, and SQL
• Experience building Data Infrastructure for Machine Learning
• Experience building and maintaining engineering products that are responsive and reliable.
• Strong knowledge of data infrastructure services and platforms and how they fit together in a larger data ecosystem.
• Strong communication skills
• Experience solving data driven problems, including problem definition, data exploration, solution proposal, implementation, testing, and evaluation.
• Experience in working with stakeholders to define needs and scope projects.  These stakeholders will include subject matter experts, product managers, engineers, and designers.
• Advanced training in, experience with, and strong knowledge of, the fundamentals of Statistics, Computer Science, Math, or related fields.
