Mathematica is looking for a Data Scientist with experience in the development and implementation of applied data science for data analytics and statistical programming projects within the human services business unit. This person will make meaning from data through the creation and deployment of data-driven approaches to solve problems and answer important policy questions for clients using technologies in natural language processing, machine learning, predictive analytics, statistical modeling, analytics platforms, and data visualization. This person will have expertise in the programming languages and technologies necessary to implement these methods.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop scripts in R or Python to extract, transform, and analyze data
  • Provide methodological and programming support to data science tasks that may include natural language processing, predictive analytics, machine learning, and data visualization in collaboration with senior data science and research staff
  • Accurately interpret and clearly present statistical results using a combination of visualizations, figures, and tables with support from senior data science and research staff
  • Interface with cloud-hosted environments to scale-up compute resources, construct data pipelines, maintain database resources, etc.
  • Assist in the development of reporting specifications and data user manuals 
  • Collaborate with teams to gather and document data and security requirements 

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, data analytics, computer science, statistics, mathematics, economics, or another relevant field, or equivalent experience.  
  • Approximately 3 years of programming experience in a professional or academic environment 
  • Strong proficiency with open-source programming languages including R or Python; experience with JavaScript or statistical programming languages like Stata is a bonus
  • Possess strong knowledge of data wrangling best practices (e.g., handling missing data, validating data assumptions, constructing variables for statistical modeling) 
  • Experience with version control tools such as Git and GitHub
  • Strong foundation in statistics; experience with Bayesian statistics is a bonus
  • Familiarity with designing or working in cloud environments; experience with AWS preferred
  • Experience with SQL to interface with large structured data sources
  • Familiarity with business intelligence and data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, QuickSight, or D3.js

This position offers an anticipated annual salary range of $75,000-$90,000.
