Mathematica is looking for a Senior Data Warehouse Architect to join the Human Services team in any of our offices or fully remote. We are looking for someone who is passionate about data architecture, integration, and making sure our clients will have access to the information they need in the form they need it. The Data Warehouse Architect must have the ability to work forward from data collection through analysis to reporting, and backward from desired visualizations to the efficient data infrastructure to make real-time access possible. The Data Warehouse Architect must be able to understand the entire data flow of a project and be able to personally design and implement the tables and processes necessary within whatever databases are required to bring the clients the information they need. In this role, you will initiate, evaluate, and influence projects. The Data Warehouse Architect sets standards for data architecture, management, processing, integration, governance, visualization, and reporting and ensures the standards are applied throughout the projects, in coordination with our clients. Some projects will be built from the ground up. With others, we will be provided with legacy structures and processes which will need to be adapted as the project progresses. The Data Warehouse Architect will also initiate projects needed to close the gap between the current situation and future goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead data warehouse design, development, and implementation for multiple client projects
  • Collaborate with other members of project teams focused on requirements gathering, online reporting, and data visualizations to ensure that data warehouse solutions will meet client needs and end user experience expectations
  • Work closely with software engineers and database developers to implement data warehouse solutions including databases, ETL software, and business intelligence and data visualization software
  • Partner with cloud architects to design and implement data warehouse solutions that will perform and operate efficiently and effectively in AWS Cloud environments, both in-house and in clients’ cloud environments
  • Design and gain approvals, internally and from our clients, on data warehouse solutions, technologies, and plans/estimates

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer information systems, computer science, systems engineering, or similar degree; equivalent professional experience without a degree will be considered
  • 10+ years of experience with data architecture and data modeling for large applications, enterprise systems, or warehouse and reporting needs for a function or organization
  • 7+ years of experience in modern information technology data practices and tools such as: ETL tools and processes; data lakes, data warehouses, data marts; off-the-shelf data visualization and business intelligence software; open-source reporting and visualization frameworks and languages
  • Experience with at minimum MSSQL Server, ideally also Postgres, MySQL and other relational databases, including deployment of databases in the cloud.
  • Experience with AWS cloud preferred, other cloud experience such as Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform is accepted.
  • Experience with data warehouse solutions such as Snowflake or AWS Redshift desired.
  • Ability to act as a technical leader promoting consensus and knowledge transfer to team members, including coaching and mentoring of other staff
  • Experience using or implementing data architecture and data governance processes
  • Experience managing relationships with clients, including interactions with CIO and CDO staff, as well as non-technical staff using the data warehouse and data visualization solutions
  • Experience with business intelligence and data visualization tools such as Tableau, AWS QuickSight, and PowerBI strongly desired
  • Experience with the ETL process using tools such as Talend or Mulesoft
  • Experience with open-source data visualization languages such as D3 and RShiny desired
  • Experience designing, developing, and implementing data warehouse solutions that meet performance and operational requirements at scale
  • Ability to plan and accurately estimate resources to implement data warehouse solutions


This position offers an anticipated annual base salary range of $110,000 - $155,000. This position is eligible for an annual bonus, based on company and individual performance.

Various federal agencies with whom we contract require that staff successfully undergo a background investigation or security clearance as a condition of working on the project. If you are assigned to such a project, you will be required to obtain the requisite security clearance.
