Healthcare needs good data. At PicnicHealth, we are building deep real-world datasets fueling cutting-edge research while giving patients control of their own medical record data. These complete, clinically-rich datasets produce unique insights — across dozens of diseases — to ultimately get the right treatments into patients’ hands faster. We do this by working directly with patients and leveraging state of the art machine learning to transform messy medical records into structured, research-ready datasets. To date we’ve helped tens of thousands of patients securely access their records and proactively contribute to advancing research in diseases that impacts their lives.

Founded in 2014, PicnicHealth partners with 13 of the top 30 biopharma companies and we have raised over $100 million in venture capital from investors including Amplify Partners, Felicis Ventures and B Capital Group.

And we are just getting started! If you are looking to join an award winning, mission-driven, motivated team that is making a real impact across millions of people’s lives, PicnicHealth might just be the place for you.

The Opportunity

At PicnicHealth, Data Scientists on the Quantitative Sciences (QS) team are responsible for translating, assessing, and augmenting our Real World Data (RWD) to develop actionable insights and evidence for our life science partners. We’re seeking an experienced data scientist to join the team to develop bespoke statistical analyses, and to help our partners extract value from our data.

Roles on the QS team put you at the intersection of scientific insight and technological development. You’ll advise our product teams on how to improve the quality and usability of our datasets. You’ll collaborate with clinicians and epidemiologists to shape the scientific direction of the company. And you’ll work with your fellow data scientists to build tools and algorithms in R that put reliable, reproducible insights into the hands of our coworkers and our partners.

As a Data Scientist, you will:

  • Use PicnicHealth’s large, multi-modal real-world datasets to answer critical clinical questions,
  • Transform real-world data into actionable insights by building analytics, statistical methods, and compelling data visualizations in R,
  • Work with a cross-functional team to define and clarify analytic requirements, develop analysis plans, ensure data quality standards, and create publication-ready methods and results,
  • Develop and manage relationships with external partners (including life science companies, regulatory agencies, academic institutions, and health technology assessment bodies) to advance the integration of our analytic products, including through peer reviewed scientific publication,
  • Conduct research to assess our data quality, identifying gaps and proposing solutions, and
  • Become a subject matter expert on our data and its capabilities, and leading technical initiatives that further our understanding of RWD and methods to generate real-world evidence.

If you have the following, we want to talk to you:

  • Hold an advanced degree in (bio)statistics, epidemiology, health economics, or a related discipline
  • Have 5+ years of experience in a quantitative position, including experience at a pharmaceutical company, contract research organization (CRO), or similar life sciences/biotech company
  • Have advanced experience with R, or intermediate R knowledge + advanced experience with another statistical programming environment (e.g. SAS, Stata, Python)
  • Have experience applying statistical methodologies to medical data, including real-world data
  • Are an excellent oral and written communicator, and are comfortable communicating with clients

The following is a bonus:

  • Have experience with command-line tools, SQL, and/or building R packages
  • Have familiarity with clinical ontologies (e.g. OMOP, ICD, RxNorm, SNOMED, LOINC) and standard data formats (e.g. SDTM, ADAM, CDISC)
  • Have experience working with regulatory-grade data or preparing regulatory submissions
  • Have experience in the tech/start-up space

We expect all team members to be motivated to be amazing in their roles and, ultimately, to move the PicnicHealth mission forward.
