Thyme Care is an oncology digital health start-up that’s focused on radically improving the cancer experience with early and ongoing intervention. We help individuals with cancer, their caregivers, clinicians, health plans, and employers by coordinating integrated care that leads to better results, lower costs, and aligned incentives. Every Thyme Care member is assigned a personalized team of physician-guided oncology nurses and resource specialists who provide education, guidance, and advocacy as they navigate the complex healthcare system. We facilitate quick access to quality resources and high-value care, coordinating directly with providers and offering support every step of the way. Our high-touch, tech-enabled model generates actionable insights that allow us to identify at-risk members earlier and offer them the most relevant support based on where they are in their cancer journey—closing gaps in care and eliminating excess spend.

Your Role:

As a Population Health Data Scientist at Thyme Care, you’ll  work with our Product, Engineering, Clinical, and Growth teams to provide insights to shape our growth and support the continuous improvement of our care navigation platform. We sit at the intersection between patients, health plans, oncology providers, ACOs, and other value-based care organizations. You will develop analytical models to identify our members’ longitudinal needs and design interventions to improve their outcomes. You will also be a champion for leveraging member-level claims and clinical data to ensure a truly patient-centric approach for our members.

After three months you will:

  • Gain a deep understanding of Thyme Care’s data ecosystem and analytic capabilities.
  • Work with our product and commercial team to develop the infrastructure that allows us to identify opportunities to improve the quality of our products and increase the impact of our services on members’ lives. For example, you will have worked with our Product and Care team to measure the efficacy of our Symptom Management interventions by analyzing member reported outcomes as well utilization metrics derived from claims data.
  • Partner with the Care, Clinical, and Product teams to understand business needs and translate them into analysis plans and technical implementation.
  • Build and deploy dashboards driven by actual data and real models to deliver insights for the way we navigate care for our members. For example, you have analyzed historical utilization patterns for palliative care and hospice, and partnered with the Product team to improve the quality of life for our members’ with advanced cancers and ensure that their treatment is aligned with their individual goals.

After 6 months you will:

  • Translate organizational needs into formal hypotheses, identify and execute on the most appropriate data science or statistical analysis for the job, and deliver insights back to the stakeholders.
  • Interface with other parts of the organization and be recognized as a competent and respectful contributor. You will contribute to the translation of our data assets into business opportunities and strategic initiatives for Thyme Care.
  • Build and lead key relationships with our payer partners, and become the first line of contact  for their inquiries on interventions and outcomes

What leads to success:

  • People-first: Thyme Care’s mission and members matter to you, deeply.
  • Experience: You have worked with product teams and stakeholders before to understand their goals and questions to support them. You can define and acknowledge tradeoffs between methodological rigor and need to get a quick signal. You have worked with large data sets and are comfortable with statistical modeling. (GLM, hierarchical models, difference-in-differences, supervised versus unsupervised learning are not foreign concepts.)
  • Technical ability: You can work with SQL (selects, filters, joins, views, CTEs, etc) and open source programming languages (R or Python) for data analysis and visualizations. You know how to leverage software engineering best practices such as testing, code review, and documentation. Optionally, you may be familiar with dbt.
  • Curiosity: You have a drive to understand how things work and love sharing that knowledge with others.
  • Comfort with ambiguity.  You have a proven track record of success within scaling businesses, fast-paced environments, and ambitious startups. You know how to chart a course through ambiguous challenges.

We are committed to promoting the health and well-being of all individuals. As a provider of cancer care navigation, we recognize that those with cancer constitute a vulnerable population at risk of contracting COVID-19.  As such, Thyme Care has adopted a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy, requiring all employees to receive a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment, subject only to conflicting laws and approved exemptions based on medical or religious objections.

Additionally, we believe employees should be paid fairly compared to their peers inside the company and in the market. We also believe that your personal needs and preferences should be taken into consideration so we allow some choice between equity and cash.

We recognize a history of inequality in healthcare. We’re here to challenge the status quo and create a culture of inclusion through the care we give and the company we build. We embrace and celebrate a diversity of perspectives in reflection of our members and the members we serve. We are an equal opportunity employer.
