This role will help enable Starbucks in overhauling its Workforce Management ecosystem to uplift the experience of our store partners and better capture customer demand. This role will serve as a technical and strategic advisor to a broader data science team responsible for the development of a best-in-class scheduling engine that balances the needs of our store partners against business priorities. Additionally, the role will unlock the architectural integration between other components of the broader Workforce Management ecosystem such as staffing and resource allocation.
As a principal data scientist, you will…
- Build and supervise teams building optimization models; robust optimization, gradient and non-gradient optimization as well as work to scale these models across large problems.
- Support deployment of AI/ML models leveraging distributed frameworks and cloud computing
- Support and guide other data science professionals in building and sustaining complex model systems.
- Help set the strategic technical vision of the data science team working to improve workforce management at Starbucks.
We’d love to hear from people with:
- Minimum 10 Year’s Experience
- Education: MS+ (PhD preferred) with concentration in quantitative discipline - Stats, Math, Comp Sci, Engineering, Econ, Quantitative Social Science or similar discipline
- PhD in quantitative discipline, preferred
- Ability to apply knowledge of multidisciplinary business principles and practices to achieve successful outcomes in cross-functional projects and activities
- Mastery and comprehensive proficiency across most Modeling & Machine Learning Techniques (regression, tree models, survival analysis, cluster analysis, forecasting, anomaly detection, association rules, etc.)
- Mastery and comprehensive proficiency across most Data ETL (Teradata, Oracle, SQL, Python, Java, Ruby, Pig)
- Mastery and comprehensive proficiency across most Analytic Languages (R, SAS, SPSS, Stata)
- Big data processing techniques, preferred
- Retail, customer loyalty, and eCommerce experience, preferred

*If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above. For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.
The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
