About the Team

Data is a vital asset at the College Board that underpins all the services that challenge students to own their future. The Information Management team is a 7-10 person team supporting data governance, data quality, data standards, and technology tools for data management. As a team we are passionate about the management of data – its availability, currency, usefulness, accuracy, and relationship with other enterprise data.   

About the Opportunity  

As a Director for Strategy & Data Governance you will work on College Board’s mission critical products. You will build strategy to help the organization align to the mission by working with partners across the organization on wide array of products and services. You will do so by using the Data Governance functions. The role also offers you the ability to improve our existing Data Governance framework. Most importantly you will be an ambassador for Data Governance and will shine light on the important role we play to ensuring product owners, system owners, and programs talk to one another to make well-informed decisions. Once again, as a team we are passionate about the management of data – its availability, currency, usefulness, accuracy, and relationship with other enterprise data. In this role, you will:

Own, Design & Build Products and Services (60%)

  • Lead the data exchange governance process - define and enforce standards for exchange of data at College Board. We leverage event-driven data exchange framework.

  • Work on an end-to-end solution that allows customers to understand the evolution of a business event.

  • Understand pain-points, identify features that should be built to improve standards and make the process efficient across all our products and services.

  • Collaborate with the Tech Strategy, Cloud and Micro Service Center of Excellence, govern and act as the gate keeper for internal & external sharing of data and develop & evolve the data sharing standards.

  • Partner with the Information Management (IM) DevOps team on requirements, strategy and implementation of the frontend and backend tools that support metadata management, enforce best practices for managing metadata across the College Board, and define and manage metadata policies.

  • Monitor data quality, identify data quality issue patterns, applying remediation plans, implement data controls, and manage data quality remediation strategies.

  • Exhibit strong database skills and experience with relational and non-relational database technology such as Oracle, Sybase, MySQL, DB2, SQL Server, PostgreSQL and DynamoDB, just to name a few.

  • Demonstrate understanding around collection, processing, storing, and sharing of large and complex data sets leveraging - AWS EC2, S3, Glacier, Lamda, etc., Business Intelligence (BI), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and big data frameworks such as data lake.

  • Build product(s) using the latest agile practices. Lead using Agile methods to align data and protect the privacy of our customers.

  • Use the Data Governance functions to support the standards identified by the Data Management Team.

  • Work with technical cross program teams in strategizing the transition from on-prem data sources and collaborate with the architecture review board in ensuring adherence to data governance standards and policies.

Data Governance and Privacy (20%)

  • Participate in Data Governance forums including a cross-departmental team of Data Stewards, Business Stewards, Architects, Policy Analysts and Data Analysts, to achieve measurable results in the areas of risk management, policy development, data quality, and data enrichment.

  • Advocate for the quality, alignment, and privacy of our data, strategizing on how to make it most impactful, and encourage data driven decision-making across all parts of the company with a style that exhibits collaboration, business orientation, goal driven to ensure business objectives are solved through creative use of data and a thorough understanding of the underlying technology.

  • Protect and secure the privacy of student, professional, parent, employee data by working closely with the legal/privacy office, programs and collaborating with technology partners to ensure College Board remains in compliance with the latest privacy legislations.

  • Work closely with the security team and other key stakeholders and across multiple divisions within the College Board on data collection, processing, storage, and data sharing policies and initiatives.

Strategy & Communication (20%)

  • Develop and manage relationships across the organization to align data strategy and identify opportunities to streamline and improve current business practices.

  • Develop a deep understanding of the new messaging and data sharing architecture and support the governance of the message event registry.

  • Build strong partnership that encourages business and technology partners to collaborate with Data Governance on mission critical products and services but also encourages sharing of unintended data issues that impacts quality of data.

  • Design and execute Data Governance strategy and help evolve the program through partnership, high-value outcomes, enforcement of policy and standards, and communications (early and often).

  • Promote, communicate, improve, and enforce data governance best practices across the College Board, including to divisional vice presidents and executive leadership teams.

About You

You have:

  • 5-7 years of relevant experience, with a preference for 7+ years of data management experience

  • Bachelor's degree or relevant experience

  • Experience should include direct experience in the analysis, design, training, and implementation phases of large data management projects

  • Experience with AWS

  • Experience managing data initiatives across organizations

  • Process design and impact analysis experience

  • Experience with change management efforts

  • Experience with education data and data policy are highly preferred

  • Experience with BI tools and reporting platforms

  • Experience working as a Product Owner

  • Experience with Agile product development

  • Comfortable with a cross-functional team environment

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Excellent analytical skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to negotiate and influence IT and Business Stakeholders.

  • We believe in compensating staff members fairly in relation to each other, their qualifications, and their impact. The salary range for a new employee in this position is $96,000 to $150,000. The salary offer of an individual candidate within this range is specific to their location and qualifications.
