The Director of Infrastructure and Data Engineering is a multidisciplinary role that reports to the VP of Engineering. They manage an Infrastructure team that is responsible for Cloud Infrastructure, Site Reliability Engineering, and Developer Productivity at Shift. They also manage a Data Engineering team that is responsible for data tools and pipelines that support all Analytics and Reporting at Shift. By mentoring, recruiting, and guiding their staff, they will ensure that Infrastructure and Data services at Shift are delivered using modern techniques and to a high degree of quality.

What You Will Do:

  • Manage the infrastructure team and data engineering teams.
  • Mentor, recruit and guide staff to ensure infrastructure and data services are delivered using modern techniques.
  • Be a role model and Champion for team and cross-functional collaboration
  • Demonstrate professionalism by example and empathy for other functional groups within the business.

What You Will Bring:

  • 5+ years of experience managing teams supporting production cloud infrastructure (must include AWS and Kubernetes).
  • 5+ years of experience mentoring engineers in DevOps disciplines of Cloud Infrastructure, Site Reliability Engineering, and Developer Productivity.
  • 10+ years of experience managing Linux-based Server Operating Systems.
  • 5+ years of experience managing environments using Infrastructure- and Configuration-as-Code (Terraform/CloudFormation/etc).
  • 5+ years of experience managing large high-performance databases and data processing jobs for business-critical reporting applications.
  • 5+ years of experience managing costs related to cloud providers and SaaS tools, preferably including AWS Reserved and Spot Instances.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate our long term technical strategy to partners across the business.
  • Thorough understanding of web service fundamentals, such as HTTP/S, SSL/TLS, TCP/UDP, caching, DNS and load balancing.
  • Expert knowledge of monitoring systems including host/OS metrics, logging, and web application performance, using SaaS products such as DataDog, StackDriver, etc.
  • PostgreSQL Database performance tuning and high-availability experience.
  • Experience working collaboratively with software engineers on web-apps, leveraging your familiarity with MVC frameworks, build pipelines and deployment strategies.
  • Experience establishing and facilitating agile methodologies to plan and track work across multiple teams.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience designing data infrastructure to handle PII to meet privacy regulations and data security concerns.
  • Production experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Experience managing tooling for Machine Learning models and infrastructure for ML Training.
