About the Role
As an Enterprise Data Architect, you will be responsible for conceptualizing, implementing and maintaining scalable data architecture and solutions for systems to collect and process events of massive scale to gain operational and business insight into the performance and optimization of shipping services. You’ll be a critical driving force to support Shippo scaling by designing and implementing our data architecture framework and standards. You will work closely with the data engineering, data science, analysts, broader product and engineering teams, and business stakeholders to drive important data architecture initiatives.
The Enterprise Data Architect will serve as a trusted advisor for the data domain, ensuring architecture and enable data analytics, data science, customer analytics and data services for critical application enablement.
Responsibilities
- Analyze and translate business requirements into conceptual and detailed logical data models, and turn them into physical data models and solutions
- Work with business, product team, and existing data teams to develop the data strategy roadmap
- Maintain and communicate about Master Data, Metadata, Data Management Repositories, Logical Data Models, Data Standards
- Define data flows, i.e., which parts of the organization generate data, which require data to function, how data flows are managed, and how data changes in transition
- Create logical data models based on existing applications and databases
- Contribute to ongoing updates to data modeling standards and guidelines
- Drive continual improvement and enhancement of existing data collection, management, and utilization strategy
- Build partnerships throughout the organization to understand business requirements and identify opportunities for business impact through data & analytics
- Participate in design and evolve our large scale data infrastructure, data lake and data processing workflows to support running our business intelligence, data analytics and data science processes
- Collaborates with product, engineering and business teams to improve data models that feed data analytics, data science, customer analytics and data services, increasing data accessibility and fostering data-informed decision making across the organization
- Champion engineering organization’s adoption and ongoing use of the data infrastructure
- Coach teams on best practices and latest patterns and methodologies

Requirements
- A minimum of 5 years of direct experience in enterprise data architecture design
- Strong conceptual, logical and physical data modeling for OLAP data warehouse and OLTP transaction processing DB
- Deep knowledge of architectural patterns such as data warehouse and data lake, and the ability to leverage them to enable operational and analytical use cases
- Solid experience with data architecture, including master data management, data curation, ETL/ELT, data pipelines and data security best practices
- Experience with implementing data pipelines and ETL processes
- Demonstrated experience with data systems in the cloud such as AWS Redshift and RDS systems
- Good knowledge or experience with NoSQL database design
- Understanding of system integration and data access approaches, such as APIs and event-based architectures
- Experience establishing data governance standards, especially handling data compliance standards such as GDPR and CCPA
- Experience driving new initiatives across engineering organizations
- Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Deep understanding of customer needs and passion for customer success
- Exhibit core behaviors focused on craftsmanship, continuous improvement, and team success
- Good understanding of technologies such as RESTful APIs and/or GraphQL
- BS or MS degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
Bonus Points
- Experience with Big Data frameworks such as Airflow, EMR/Hadoop, Spark, Data Lake and associated tools
- Experience building data stream-processing systems, using solutions such as Kinesis Stream and Kafka
- Experience with PostgreSQL
- Experience with machine learning, active learning a plus
