Data & Analytics Engineering: 
Over the past 3 years, Canva has grown significantly, with a Data organisation that has gone from half a dozen people to over 150 engineers, analysts, and scientists. In this time Canva’s data stack has evolved to support Canva’s lightning fast growth and power Canva’s innovative global product. 

The Analytics Engineering specialty was created in August 2021 as part of our broader data community. Our mission is to grow a high performing specialty of central analytics engineers building our Data Warehousing Platforms and Data Services, as well as embedded engineers that sit within Business Teams supporting their goals.

Critically, we aim to establish a world class operating model connecting the central data platforms and services to the embedded engineers, building a connected ecosystem that supports agility and speed of delivery for all of our teams, while ensuring scalable outcomes and minimising duplication. 

About the position:
As the Head of Analytics Engineering, you will build and lead a rapidly growing team of Analytics Engineers that deliver data warehousing and analytics throughout the  business. 

In this role, we’re looking for a strategic leader to firmly establish the function while driving the strategic direction of our Data Services and connected analytics ecosystem. You will also work closely with Data Teams and Engineers to advocate best-practices and drive excellence in Analytics Engineering.

As part of the Data Leadership team, reporting to the Head of Data, you will collaborate closely with Data Subspecialty and Capability leaders, who are responsible for delivering against Canva’s Data Strategy to empower Canvanauts to do their best work, with the best data, to deliver magic to our customers.

You will be a motivated self-starter with the ability to build and manage diverse teams and contribute to Canva’s data maturity and sophistication. Key to your success at Canva will be your ability to drive cross-company collaboration and influence key decisions, bringing internal and external stakeholders on a journey to realise a world class data strategy.

What you will do:

    • Set the long and short term strategic vision and goals for Analytics Engineering within Canva.
    • Grow the Analytics Engineering subspecialty, including hiring and placement practices, evolving role definitions, promoting the subspecialty across the business and driving culture and values to drive team engagement and retention.
    • Establish the role and function of the embedded Analytics Engineers within the business units, establishing clear ownership and accountability for key data models in these domains. 
    • Ensure all delivery in the Analytics Engineering specialty meets Canva’s data governance, security and management practices and contribute to evolving these practice to meet our changing needs.
    • Establish the operating model between central data platforms teams and embedded analytics engineers to empower the business to run at speed while delivering data efficiently and effectively. 
    • Establish a central Data Services team to build and manage a data service layer that supports speed, quality and efficient delivery of analytic solutions across the business. 
    • Be an active member of the Data Leadership team, contributing to the development of, and delivery against Canva’s Data Strategy while building on the shared culture and identity of the Data sub-specialties within the organisation.
    • Continually assess practices to identify opportunities to increase speed of analytics outcomes while driving business value by building central solutions achieving scaled delivery.
    • Work with the Product and Engineering leads of the central Data teams, as well as the embedded analytics engineers to support them to develop their goals in line with the broader Data and Analytics Engineering strategic direction.
    • Directly support the Insights & Metrics function and broader Data Analytics and Business Intelligence functions.
    • Ensure that Analytics Engineers at Canva are following modern engineering principles and practices such as version control, documentation, testing and CI/CD to enable both quality and speed..

What we're looking for:

    • 10+ years of relevant experience in data warehousing, engineering, pipelining, analytics, consulting, servicing the business with data solutions.
    • 4+ years of engineering team building and management.
    • Strong understanding of the role of Analytics Engineer, where the role fits and how the role impacts a modern data organisation.
    • Experience building and leading a large scale central and distributed data capability ideally in a hyper growth tech company (SaaS preferred).
    • Have a solid technical background, with experience in cloud warehouses, BI tools, data modelling and processing data at petabyte scale.
    • Experience building strategies and operating models for “data as a service” across a large modern business.
    • Highly numeric with strong communication skills and the ability to communicate highly complex information in clear and simple language.
    • Ability to take ambiguous problems and solve them in a structured, hypothesis-driven, data-supported way.
    • Strong stakeholder empathy and customer focus.
