As the Head of Engineering, Data Platform and Analytics, you will be responsible for achieving our mission of building a highly scalable, reliable, and efficient data platform that makes it easy for users to get deep insights from vast amounts of distributed data. This data platform with be a differentiator for Twilions and our customers.

In order to help realize our goal of allowing our users to easily discover, understand, trust and transform data no matter where it lives within Twilio, you will manage several teams that run these platforms with high availability and at a very large scale, while providing guarantees around end-to-end data reliability.  We run Kafka, Elasticsearch, Spark, a Hudi-based data lake, Presto, ETL tools, low-latency data stores, multiple data warehouses and a data catalog. You will also work with the AI teams to help them be successful in their mission. As a critical strategic thought leader, you will partner closely with product management to establish a future vision for our data lake, multiple query engines and guide your organization to deliver this vision.

About the job

Products are built on data. The developers of our products, their managers, compliance teams and executives, all need to know about the state of our products and their activity. Our team manages the flow of this data within Twilio, at massive scale, securing this data and allowing governed access to it. We also build the tools and support the data lake and data warehouses that allows internal users to query all of this data. We are successful when we make it easy for internal users to securely and efficiently get insights from data.

Required:

We are looking for a Head of Engineering who lives the Twilio Magic. The ideal candidate has:

  • 10+ years of technical/people leadership experience in Data Engineering/Data Infrastructure and Data Platforms
  • Passion for making a difference at work
  • Experience managing multiple teams to achieve timely outcomes
  • Prior experience scaling an organization for growth
  • The ability to recruit and nurture top talent
  • Demonstrated technical breadth and depth as evidenced by papers, code, and/or presentations
  • The ability to set ambitious goals with measurable results using frameworks such as OKRs
  • A deep understanding of technical trends
  • Experience working with product management to collaboratively set and deliver on a vision
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Clear understanding of the software development lifecycle from reviewing requirements to debugging complex systems in production
  • ​​​​Experience maintaining and operating always-on cloud services
  • Strong customer focus
  • BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science or a related field

Location 

This role will be remote in the US but is not eligible to be hired in San Francisco CA, Oakland CA, San Jose CA or the surrounding areas.

Location dependent information

Colorado applicants: 

  • The estimated pay range for this role, based in Colorado, is $193,760  - 242,200
  • Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Twilio's equity plan.

The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location within the state. This role is also eligible to participate in Twilio’s equity plan and for the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave.
