Who You Are:

We are seeking a Lead Data Engineer well-versed in various data technologies and methodologies. You are excited to have a meaningful and impactful role on our Data team, which sits at the center of a collaborative product and engineering team. Your experience includes collaborating with teams comprised of full-stack engineers, data scientists, analysts, and product managers. You excel at balancing priorities and scoping projects effectively to yield results while avoiding unnecessary complexity. You possess a keen understanding of application and streaming data architectures, data lakes, data warehousing, distributed computing, and ETL/ELT processes. This role will report to the Data Engineering Manager and can be based anywhere in the US.

What You Will Do:

Data Strategy, Architecture and Infrastructure

  • Lead Data Strategy Development: Play a key role in shaping the strategy for data utilization and management at Storyblocks.
  • Develop and Manage Data Pipelines: Create and maintain efficient data pipelines that provide accessible and timely data to analysts, data scientists, and other key users.
  • Optimize Event Streaming: Ensure the reliability, speed, and user-friendliness of our event streaming system.

Data Management, Orchestration, and Optimization

  • Collaborate on Data Optimization: Work alongside analytics engineers to refine our data models and improve testing processes.
  • Manage Data Workflows with Apache Airflow: Effectively orchestrate data-related jobs using Apache Airflow.
  • Maintain an Organize a Data Lakehouse: Contribute to the maintenance and expansion of a structured data lakehouse utilizing Delta Lake.

Mentorship and Collaboration

  • Support a Self-Service Data Model: Assist in the development of a self-service model for the data team.
  • Foster a Data-First Approach: Actively work with analysts, engineers, and product leaders to promote a culture that prioritizes data.
  • Emphasize Continuous Learning and Teaching: Engage in ongoing learning and share your knowledge with the team.

 

What You Bring to the Table: 

Required

  • Solid Engineering Background: Extensive experience working with data as a software engineer, data engineer, or equivalent role.
  • Skilled in Data Pipeline Management: Proven experience in building and orchestrating scalable data pipelines.
  • Data Lakehouse/Warehouse Experience: Experience working with data lakehouses or warehouses.
  • Streaming Technology Proficiency: Familiarity with streaming platforms such as Apache Kafka and Spark.
  • Cloud Platform Knowledge: Working knowledge of cloud services like AWS or Azure.
  • Data Quality Advocate: A strong commitment to delivering high-quality data, vital for creating a data-driven culture.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Knowledge Sharing: A readiness to share expertise and promote data understanding.

 

Preferred

  • Advanced Tool Expertise: Experience with Spark or PySpark, Kafka, Databricks, and Delta Lake.
  • Data Modeling Skills: Familiarity with data modeling techniques.
  • Strong AWS Knowledge: Extensive experience with AWS.
  • Machine Learning/MLOps Experience: Background in machine learning or MLOps.

  • Competitive and fair compensation: We believe in fair pay--equal pay for equal work. For each title, we consistently apply competitive salary bands based on market data and benchmarks which are reviewed twice a year. What you’ve been paid before, fear of conflict, or willingness to negotiate does not play a part in determining your pay.
    • The annual base salary range for this position is $168,000 - $188,000. Placement within the range is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to: knowledge, skills, years & depth of experience, and equity with internal team members.
  • 401(k) retirement plan: We offer both a Traditional and Roth 401(k) with a company match.

  • Unlimited vacation: At Storyblocks we take vacation seriously. That means take the time off when you need it. Don’t worry about tracking hours or accounting for partial days. Typically, employees take about three or four weeks each year. Plus, two company-wide week breaks in July and December as well as numerous Fridays off throughout the year to take advantage of 3-day weekends.
