Kensho is an Artificial Intelligence company that builds solutions to uncover insights in messy and unstructured data that enable critical workflows and empower businesses to make decisions with conviction. Our products are powered by state-of-the-art Machine Learning techniques that allow customers to unlock insights faster using Artificial Intelligence, including voice-to-text transcription, data extraction from documents and natural language processing that gives computers the ability to comprehend and analyze human language.

As a Manager for the  ML Ops team you will work closely with Core Infra, Machine Learning, SRE and other engineering teams to codify best practices, standardize processes, build tools and frameworks that improve developer’s and modeler’s workflows, and help manage our growing inventory of state-of-the-art machine learning models.

At Kensho, we believe in flexibility-first, and give our employees the opportunity to work from where they feel most productive and engaged (must be in the United States). We also value in-person collaboration, so there may be times when travel to one of our Kensho hubs (NY/DC/MA) will be required for team meetings or company events.

Kensho states that the anticipated base salary range for the position is 180k - 250k. In addition, this role is eligible for an annual incentive bonus and equity plans. At Kensho, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

What is ML Ops?

ML Ops is a set of practices that combines Machine Learning and DevOps, which aims to deploy and maintain ML systems in production reliably and efficiently. Software engineers develop a set of tools or practices for versioning, validating (data & model), deploying, scaling, and monitoring Kensho’s ML services. ML Ops includes managing the consumption and use of models in conjunction with the ML, API Services, SRE and Core Infra teams. ML Ops engineers may create tools to help prototype/build new models, monitor or retrain models (e.g. due to drift) over their lifespan, as well as decommission models that are obsolete or no longer meet performance requirements. ML Ops may help with creating multiple versions of models, trained or tuned for specific use cases or customers. MLOps may develop tools or processes to help end users discover ML.

What Will You Do?

    • You will manage a dedicated team of software engineers to develop and manage tools that help automate and improve Kensho’s software development and model building practices.
    • You will partner with your manager to grow, mentor, coach and develop the team members both professionally and technically.
    • You will establish best practices for building, using, and managing ML models.
    • You will build systems to automate model training, deployment, usage and discoverability.
    • You will build sophisticated systems to monitor the health and performance of statistical models.
    • You will meet regularly with other team leads including machine learning, infrastructure and key product stakeholders to identify generalizable work and prioritize among planned projects.

A few qualities that will make you successful in this Team Lead role are:

    • You have a strong desire to work on an internal team and provide value to your fellow engineers.
    • You want to be a force multiplier and make Kensho’s software and model development the best in the world.
    • You have an eye towards system design and building frameworks that are scoped as well as extensible.
    • You have a strong understanding of the machine learning life cycle and how automation and tools could be used to improve the process.
    • You excel at looking at a problem from a high level, gathering requirements from multiple stakeholders and empowering your team to make decisions.
    • You have some experience developing containerized tools or microservices and have a desire to better understand our deployment tools.
    • You have a desire to balance a technical project while supporting your team’s needs.

What We Look For

    • 6+ years of experience
    • Experience mentoring and/or building a team of engineers. We are looking for someone who can think long term about hiring and training
    • Experience running production services in a modern, containerized cloud environment.
    • Experience with a statistics or machine learning framework (scikit-learn, tensorflow, statsmodels, pytorch).
    • A recent history of working closely with code and backend system architecture
    • Thoughtful and collaborative code reviewer and teammate.
