What are we looking for?

WorkMoney is looking for a Data Engineer to help upgrade our current environment and allow us to scale. We’re planning significant investments in our web presence and our growth programs in the year ahead and need systems and databases that can grow with them. This role will support the data team in building the foundations for making smart data-informed decisions across platforms. Successful candidates will have experience with AWS environments, writing and optimizing SQL queries, and setting up prod and dev environments for both analytics and data science. We also need someone who can think big and strategically about what tools and platforms are necessary, and which can be automated away. This role will require you to move between in-the weeds requirement gathering/implementation and large scale strategy and design of a data ecosystem.

As WorkMoney's data engineering "expert" in a startup environment, you may tackle many projects. We are open to individuals at the "Manager" or "Senior Manager" levels and encourage you to apply if you are interested in WorkMoney's mission and meet many of the core requirements.

Core technical responsibilities:

  • Work on mission oriented projects in support of Work Money's broader goals
  • Maintain accurate, updated data in a fast, reliable and optimized AWS database for both data analytics and data science projects
  • Communicate effectively with non-technical partners and colleagues; Troubleshoot data issues with various internal and external partners
  • Identify areas for optimization in existing platforms and implement them
  • Evaluate tools and products to create the best and most cost-effective environment
  • Work with a wide range of staff to collect requirements for new data requests
  • Create and maintain documentation and training materials
  • Implement production-quality solutions to business problems

Additional Senior Manager responsibilities:

  • Hire, Supervise, and support one or more engineers
  • Provide informal mentorship and training to colleagues
  • Act as a project, product, and personnel manager to move forward complex projects
  • Explore new and creative ways to solve economic justice challenges using data and technology

Core requirements for the role

  • A desire to work in a mission oriented environment; alignment with WorkMoney's economic justice goals
  • Professional experience setting up and optimizing data environments in AWS (2+ years in a senior technical and/or individual contributor role; 5+ years of experience in an office environment); Familiarity with devops or sysops is strongly preferred; AWS administrative experience is valuable
  • Excellent communication skills with technical & non-technical audiences alike
  • Proven ability to work with analytics and data science teams on turning requirements into finished products
  • Expert in writing and optimizing SQL queries in a cloud environment (AWS strongly desired)
  • Self-motivated problem solver with a knack for sniffing out data inaccuracies

For consideration as a Senior Manager, applicants will meet some of the following requirements:

  • Staff management experience and a desire to grow these skills
  • Experience with project and/or product management in a flexible environment
  • Vendor management and evaluation experience
  • Experience with advocacy, legislative or electoral campaign analytics

Salary for Manager level is $90,000

Salary for Senior Manager level is $115,000

We utilize transparent and non-negotiable salary bands based on the role and responsibilities.
