Description

The Position

Do you dream about creating a more sustainable future? At Uplight, we are motivating energy users and providers to accelerate the clean energy ecosystem. Working with over 90 of the world’s leading electric and gas utilities, Uplight provides an end-to-end customer energy experience. Uplight delivers personalized experiences that customers have now come to expect–improving satisfaction, increasing revenue, reducing the cost to serve, and contributing to carbon reduction goals. We are B Corp certified, enabling us to put our values into action by not only making decisions for the benefit of our shareholders, but also for our customers, environment, employees, and community.

We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our team and help us achieve our ambitious goals for our business and the planet.

What you will contribute

You will be the technical leader within Uplight’s machine learning operations pod. This pod is responsible for the core data pipelines, storage layers, and software systems that power many of Uplight’s machine-learning models.

An engineer on our pod thrives when they enjoy working closely with the users of solutions they build. They consistently seek stakeholder feedback and look to identify opportunities that make our products better. They understand the common trade-offs in software development and how to pitch and prioritize work that moves the product in a direction aligned with the business goals.

What you get to do:

  • You will provide technical leadership on high-impact projects. This includes architecting, designing, and developing Uplight’s machine-learning operations software systems
  • Example domains may include data pipelines, feature stores, data lakes, model registries, and model serving.
  • Collaborate closely with Product and other stakeholders across the company to ensure Uplight can quickly and consistently operationalize and maintain machine learning models.
  • Embrace the lifecycle of Full Service Ownership. Own the building, testing, deployment, and maintenance of the code that you work on.
  • Work effectively within an Agile team framework and collaborate well with your team members and members of the other Platform Analytics teams.
  • Coach other team members

Skills and experience are necessary, but we hire on value alignment first, so if you feel you would be a good fit with us, still consider applying.

What you bring to Uplight:

  • You are an accomplished developer with 8+ years of experience who has spent at least some of that time designing, developing, and optimizing scalable and sustainable machine-learning solutions.
  • People who will succeed in this role also have experience with big data processing technologies (we use Airflow, Spark, and Databricks).
  • Uplight uses GCP, so prior experience building in the cloud (GCP, AWS, or Azure) is important. Uplight’s code language of choice is Python and you will also likely leverage other toolings such as FastAPI, SQL/NoSQL databases, Terraform, Docker, and CI/CD tooling.
  • This role will be highly collaborative, so the ideal candidate is someone who is excited about all things data science, big data, machine learning, and has the desire to work cross-functionally with data scientists and data engineers.

Bonus Points:

  • Previous utility and/or energy data experience
  • Experience with building solutions around processing and managing large volumes of streaming data
  • Familiarity with Databricks ecosystem of solutions
