As the VP, Data, you will play a key role in defining and driving the company's data strategy and execution. In this new role, you will report directly to the CTO and will be a strategic partner to the CEO, President, CFO, and department leads across Amplify. You will lead and build a talented cross-functional team encompassing data analytics and data engineering. You will partner with stakeholders across the company to strengthen our data culture and practices, ultimately helping ensure schools make more effective use of Amplify products to impact teachers and students.

What You’ll Do

  • Define and drive data strategy in partnership with the CTO and company leadership

  • Collaborate with department leads in empowering internal teams to make data-driven decisions

  • Establish and champion a culture of data orientation and data quality

  • Establish and champion a culture and practice of sustainable process, documentation, and best practices guidance

  • Lead development of a data staffing strategy to meet Amplify’s business goals

  • Hire, develop, and lead a team of talented data engineers, data analysts, and other professionals to implement our strategy

  • Manage the selection, relationship, and staffing of vendors where appropriate

  • Systematically describe and collect Amplify product and business data by championing and formalizing data governance, data modeling, data quality, and master data management principles, processes, and practices

  • Make data internally accessible by leading the selection, building, configuration, and evolution of existing and future BI platforms

  • Collaborate with the CTO and engineering team leads to establish data architecture strategy, design, and evolution

  • Communicate effectively and lead presentation, documentation, and training for all levels of the organization with technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Drive large-scale, cross-functional projects effectively via roadmap and backlog management, management of priorities, risk, and status; and using elements of Agile, Kanban, and Waterfall project management methodologies as appropriate

  • Translate strategic plans and roadmaps into operational budgets, and manage personnel, projects, infrastructure, and vendors to meet budget

Example Projects You Might Work On

  • “What do we mean by ‘Customer’?” – driving a cross-team process to establish and use shared definitions for key concepts

  • “Security & Access” – revamping design and implementation of access controls to facilitate data access where it’s needed, and omit it where it isn’t

  • “MDM” – Aligning, joining, and enriching product and business data to deepen insights

Basic Qualifications

  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, or other quantitative or technical discipline

  • 7+ years of experience in data engineering or related fields with increasing responsibility and strong track record of technical competencies and business strategy

  • Track record of recruiting, hiring, and managing data analysts, data scientists, and/or data engineers for performance and teamwork

  • Expertise in cloud based and SaaS data warehouses and the architecture and development of ETL/ELT pipelines

  • Proven ability to leverage business intelligence tools to foster better decision making across organizations

  • Proven ability to influence and advise senior stakeholders, coupled with the ability to bring people together on teams and collaborate on projects

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience partnering with financial, operational, and marketing teams

  • Experience in gathering, interpreting, and reporting SaaS financial and usage metrics

  • Experience with tools we use every day:

    • Storage: Snowflake, AWS Storage Services (S3, RDS, Glacier, DynamoDB), Parquet, Postgres

    • ETL/BI: Matillion, DBT, Looker, Tableau

    • Cloud Infrastructure: AWS Kinesis, Lambda, API Gateway, Terraform

  • Experience with tools we don't use and their effective application

  • Proven passion and talent for teaching and coaching

  • Experience with security design and implementation

  • Experience in education or ed-tech
