Analytics Engineering Instructor

Analytics Engineering Instructor

This job is no longer open
We launched the dbt Learn training program in January 2019, since then we’ve trained 350 people on the analytics engineering workflow–from version control to data warehousing best practices. We have sold out every single public dbt Learn, and have more demand for private dbt Learns than we can meet. In 2021, we expect to train more than 1000 analytics engineers.

This is where you come in.

We’re looking for someone who shares our excitement about empowering analysts to own the entire analytics engineering workflow with dbt. No formal teaching experience is required. Some dbt experience is preferred. If you’re the go-to person on your team when someone has a SQL question, or you’ve organized your internal Looker training, or you just love dbt and want to introduce it to others – this is the job for you.

Who we are

At Fishtown Analytics, we have developed strong opinions on how companies should practice analytics.
Specifically, we believe that:

--> Code, not graphical user interfaces, is the best abstraction to express complex analytic logic
--> Data analysts should adopt similar practices and tools to software developers
--> Critical analytics infrastructure should be controlled by its users as open source software
--> Analytic code itself — not just analytics tools — will increasingly be open source

It turns out that a lot of other people believe this too! Over the course of the past several years we've built a community of 8,000+ people and 3,000 companies who are using our ideas, products, and workflows to conduct analytics, including Lyft, Monzo, GitLab, the ACLU, Amazon, JetBlue, and RentTheRunway. Our product, dbt (https://www.getdbt.com/), has come to be synonymous with the practice of analytics engineering, defining an entire industry.

We’re on a mission to empower analysts to create and disseminate organizational knowledge. If this sounds like a mission you could get behind, we're excited to get your help to continue to power this growth into the future.

In this role you can expect to…

    • Facilitate private dbt Learn’s for Fortune 500 clients in partnership with with our Customer Success Managers and Solutions Architects
    • Spend every week in a classroom setting teaching analysts the fundamentals of analytics engineering
    • Post-COVID, you should be ready to do some traveling! In-person dbt Learn’s are one of the important ways we support local dbt communities. You’ll head to New York, San Francisco, London, Montreal, etc.
    • Build out new courses to expand the reach of the dbt Learn program
    • Become a familiar face in the dbt community. You’ll attend Meetups, speak at conferences, get in front of a camera, and answer questions in Slack. Great teachers change our lives. You’ll want to continue to invest in those relationships long after the classroom session has ended.
    • Bring an enormous amount of care to your work. Analytics engineering can be a  steep learning curve. You’ll bring empathy and care to the classroom experience.
    • Become a valued and trusted partner to your colleagues in customer success and sales, collaborating closely with them to make sure we are setting every single user up to absolutely love dbt.

You are probably a good fit if you have a mix of the following…

    • Have a minimum of 6 months experience using dbt
    • Have experience with ETL, data warehouses (Redshift, BigQuery, Snowflake), and data extraction
    • Have a history of acting as a coach or mentor in both formal and informal capacities
    • You enjoy creating training materials. Maybe you never created a full course, but you enjoy writing internal documentation or putting a quick video tutorial together for a new co-worker.
    • Are an exceptional communicator who enjoys making complex ideas feel simple and manageable
    • Are willing to travel and teach on-site at least once a month (once we’re able to travel again)

Compensation:

    • Salary: $90,000 - $140,000; dependent on experience.
    • Equity: 0.02% - 0.05%
    • Benefits: Unlimited vacation, 401k w/ 3% guaranteed contribution, excellent healthcare, and paid paternity/maternity leave
