As a Junior People Scientist, you will be expected to contribute independently to product research, distill actionable insights, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to guide product development. Your work will be instrumental in defining the next-generation of BetterUp products, as you contribute to the human-centered decision-making process, and assist in developing the most useful and usable product experiences for a global audience. 

You will collaborate with others in conducting applied quantitative and qualitative research, as well as lead smaller research initiatives exploring the behaviors and motivations of our users. Your research will help us create effective, engaging, and delightful new products and features as well as continually innovating on our existing products. You’ll inspire change at all stages of product development by delivering compelling, written, in-person and visual presentations on your findings. You will act as the voice of behavioral science in product and your research will be instrumental in defining the next generation of BetterUp products for a global audience.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Guided by your unique subject matter expertise, your primary focus will be to assist in generating research-driven insights to drive evidence-based decision-making around product development in partnership with other researchers, designers, product managers, and engineers.
  • Use multiple on- and off-product methodologies, including but not limited to 1) designing and implementing primary quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis; 2) analyzing archival product data; 3) integrating theory and empirical knowledge from peer-reviewed sources in the social sciences. 
  • Represent behavioral science on interdisciplinary teams working toward the goal of improving and/or developing various products and offerings targeting human growth and development. 
  • Contribute to in-product measurement and assessment strategies by attaining alignment with internal stakeholders, including go to market and product teams.
  • Assist in conducting formative and summative intervention evaluation and efficacy research on in-flight BetterUp products, with the goal of leading similar projects after some experience.
  • Assist in implementing rigorous experimentation on and off-platform through providing behavior change interventions, communications, nudges, and targeted messaging.
  • Collaborate on compelling written and visual presentations of research findings aimed at inspiring change and innovation at all stages of product development. 
  • Work in partnership with other researchers and functions within BetterUp (e.g., data analytics, design) to create comprehensive and coordinated research strategies that triangulate data from different sources/methods to develop recommendations.

 

If you have some or all of the following, please apply:

 

  • Required: Advanced degree (Masters required, PhD preferred) in Psychology, Organizational Behavior, Behavioral Economics, Data Science, Human Development, Health and Behavior, Human Centered Design, Sociology, Anthropology, or a related field.
  • Preferred: Relevant industry (non-academic) experience as a hands-on applied researcher, preferably in a product organization. 
  • Experience with both applied quantitative and qualitative methods  (e.g., interview, focus groups, survey, RCTs, A/B testing, thematic analysis, ethnographic research).
  • Experience with, or openness to being trained on, various data analytic and experimentation tools and platforms (e.g., R, Looker, Braze, SQL).
  • Working knowledge of multivariate statistical techniques and willingness to learn new approaches as needed.
  • Ability to assist in quickly designing and tailoring effective, appropriate research methodologies within time and resource constraints.
  • Ability to assist in creating compelling presentations and confidently convey research insights through storytelling to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience in contributing to research projects, particularly within trans-disciplinary and  cross-functional teams. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Active learner, actively seeking to expand and share knowledge and experience in behavioral science and applied research to best support the evolving needs of the team
