We’re building the best bank in the world.

A bank you'd be proud to use - and that means bringing together a talented team with diverse experiences, backgrounds and skills.

We believe there should be an alternative to the banking of the past: we're focused on solving problems, rather than selling financial products, making your financial life simpler, and giving you complete control from your smartphone.

Internally, we encourage an open, collaborative, inclusive working environment. We contribute to open source software, and we continually engage with our wonderful community. We’re hiring talented, creative problem-solvers to help us build the bank of the future. Join us!

Data at Monzo

Our Data team's mission is to Enable Monzo to Make Better Decisions, Faster

At the core of this mission sits our data platform. We're great believers in powerful, real-time analytics and empowerment of the wider business. Every engineer at Monzo is responsible for collection of relevant analytics events from their microservices. We optimise for simplicity and re-usability – all our data lives in one place and is made available via our data warehouse in Google BigQuery.

Our technology stack

We rely heavily on the following tools and technologies (note we do not expect applicants to have prior experience of all them):

  • Google Cloud Platform for all of our analytics infrastructure
  • dbt and BigQuery SQL for our data modelling and warehousing
  • Python for data science
  • Go to write our application code
  • AWS for most of our backend infrastructure

As part of your role, you'll:

  • Oversee and manage a data team within our Borrowing area, reporting to both our Borrowing Data Director and our Senior Manager for FinHealth Credit Strategy
  • Own the priorities and roadmap for Data in this team
  • Use your knowledge of the data and emerging trends to feed back into the strategy and overall goal setting for FinHealth in particular and Borrowing as a whole
  • Manage the more junior Data team members, provide coaching, mentoring and feedback to improve their skills and enhance the quality of their output
  • Code up, automate and enhance the database tables and dashboards to provide insights and promote rapid, data-driven decisions
  • Contribute to the Data Discipline by sharing your insights, contributing to our core data models and proactively spotting opportunities for applications of your work in other areas of the business

You should apply if:

  • What we’re doing here at Monzo excites you!
  • You're impact driven and eager to have a real positive impact on the company, our customers and your colleagues
  • You're passionate about data and using that data to improve & inform business decisions
  • You’re as comfortable getting hands-on
  • …and your comfortable taking a step back and thinking big-picture
  • You can convey complex issues using effective communication, both written and verbal (at Monzo we have a strong belief in simple-but-precise language. We call this our tone of voice - see here)
  • You have a self-starter mindset; you proactively identify issues and opportunities and tackle them without being told to do so

Nice to haves:

  • Experience in Financial Services, particularly retail lending in the UK
  • Experience in Collections, Recoveries or Debt Sale/Purchase

Logistics

This role is located in London. Monzo is committed to hybrid working over the long term; we find that the best balance is to spend 2-3 days per week in the office and the other 2-3 days working from home. There isn’t a prescriptive rule here - we let each team and person figure out what works best for them (the most popular office days are Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday).

It’s also possible for this role to be fully remote, so if this is a hard requirement for you please raise it in one of your first calls with our interviewing team. However given the degree of team management, mentoring and collaboration that are required to be successful, this role is hybrid-preferred.

All our interviews are conducted remotely by default, but if you’re nearby and would prefer to meet us in-person in the office then please say so.
