The Team

The Data Platform team (Part of Upstart's tech platform vertical) provides developer tools, frameworks, and scalable data infrastructure (e.g., data pipeline and relevant data stores) as shared services. We focus on two areas: (1) Data Engineering: Provide data analysts and ML scientists access to high-quality data and self-serve framework to automate data capture and curation, (2) Database Engineering: Enables the development of consistent, flexible, scalable, quality data patterns and workflows across the application data storage layer.

As the Data Engineering Manager at Upstart, you will build and manage a Data Quality team & product, which focuses on building a self-serve and config-driven service to submit, run, audit, and consolidate the various data validation & quality checks at Upstart by integrating with open-source, 3rd party, and custom data quality solutions. The team also supports and builds Upstart's data catalog solution that informs various data handling rules.

Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote, San Mateo, Columbus 

Time Zone Requirements - This team operates on the East/West Coast time zones.

Travel Requirements - This team has periodic on-site collaboration sessions twice or thrice a year. These occur 2-3 days per Quarter at the San Mateo, CA, Columbus, OH, or Austin, TX offices. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.

 

How you’ll make an impact:

  • Lead continuous planning and prioritization by collaborating with stakeholders across the various product verticals and functions (ML, Analytics, Finance) to ensure that our data engineering initiatives align with the overall business objectives.

  • Establish engineering best practices and agile execution methodologies to streamline processes and enhance overall productivity, leading to better results in data engineering projects.

What we’re looking for: 

  • Minimum requirements:
    • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Technology, or related field.
    • 6+ years of experience in data engineering or related fields, with a strong focus on data quality and governance.
    • Demonstrated leadership experience, managing and mentoring a team of data engineers (3+ years managerial experience).
    • Proficient in programming languages (e.g., Python, Java), database technologies (e.g., SQL, NoSQL) and data processing frameworks (e.g., Apache Spark).
  • Preferred qualifications:
    • Strong foundation in algorithms and data structures and their real-world use cases.
    • Experience and understanding of distributed systems, data architecture design, and big data technologies (e.g., Spark, Hadoop, Kafka, Data Lake, Databricks, Redshift).
    • Experience with AWS technologies ( e.g.,  AWS Lambda, Redshift, RDS, S3, etc.).
    • Knowledge of data quality management, data governance, and data security best practices.
    • Good knowledge of DevOps engineering using Continuous Integration/Delivery tools like Kubernetes, Jenkins, Terraform, etc., thinking about automation, alerting, monitoring, security, and other declarative infrastructure.
    • Ability to explain complex concepts in easy-to-understand ways and navigate environments where problems are not well-defined (and evolve quickly).
