The Team and Role

Because our challenges are so new, members of our Machine Learning team need strong creative problem-solving skills and the technical background to implement solutions. Our research environment affords team members the opportunity to utilize a variety of statistical and machine learning methods with the freedom and encouragement to pursue alternative approaches to solving problems. Whether developing new products or identifying novel approaches to core models, we are continuously seeking the next big ideas to move our business forward.

As a Model Governance Researcher at Upstart, you'll make an impact by researching, analyzing and creating content for Compliance, Sales and Bank Partnerships teams with respect to the impact and performance of our AI/ML models. You’ll also have an opportunity to work alongside a talented ML team that values curiosity, humility, drive and teamwork.  

  • Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Columbus or Remote (#LI-REMOTE)
  • Time Zone Requirements - This team operates on either the East or West Coast time zones.
  • Travel Requirements - This team has regular on-site collaboration sessions six times annually split between the San Mateo or Columbus office locations. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.

How you’ll make an impact:

  • Translate Upstart’s highly technical proprietary technology into language accessible to non-industry stakeholders, while maintaining discretion and confidentiality
  • Own the technical editing process for documents produced by Upstart’s machine learning team including creating and implementing formalized content style guides and templates
  • Author public-facing white papers and research papers on topics related to machine learning model governance including fair lending and model explainability
  • Develop content including sales guides, documents, and interactive tools with the purpose of making machine learning models accessible to external business partners
  • Serve as a liaison to the academic research community on issues related to machine-learning model governance
  • Potential to become a leader in the area, and take on more responsibility over time 

 What we’re looking for: 

  • Minimum requirements:
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate highly technical data and processes into language that can be understood by internal and external stakeholders
    • Sound working knowledge of statistics, econometrics, or machine learning methods
    • Programming skills in Python and/or R
    • Experience cataloguing and documenting model governance processes to a high level of detail using GitHub, Jira, Confluence, G-Suite and/or related tools
    • Ability to work cross functionally between technical and non-technical teams and act as a voice for them 
  • Preferred qualifications:
    • Core academic foundation in quantitative area of study such as Economics, Statistics, Data Science, Machine Learning, or others; 
    • Master’s, PhD or Juris Doctorate with demonstrated research and writing skills strongly preferred
    • Research interests and/or knowledge of consumer credit or fair lending practices is a plus
