The opportunity: The Data Science Manager, Advanced Analytics will provide advanced analytics support within the Business Analytics function that applies the power of data with machine learning to improve business outcomes across the Health and Risk Solutions business. This team is expected to work closely with the other functional teams, in particular the Distribution, Client Management and Sales Enablement teams. This role will attract, hire, and lead a small team of data scientists in providing business insights and guiding them in which techniques to apply. This role will partner with the business to identify opportunities to enhance existing Distribution and Client Management processes and lead larger scale projects helping drive value from data science. This role will also mentor their team and ensure the analytical output is of the highest quality and validated. This position reports to the AVP, Business Analytics within the Health and Risk Solutions business.

Primary responsibilities include scoping, developing, implementing and monitoring advanced analytics projects to support our Distribution and Client Management teams, including supporting the successful implementation of any solutions.  Additional responsibilities may include applying machine learning techniques to streamline and automate aspects of these processes or ad-hoc advanced analytics projects as assigned (potentially with other functional teams across Health and Risk Solutions).

How you will contribute:

  • Apply expertise in advanced analytics techniques to solve business problems and to review output from team members to ensure correct and high-quality analytics is being delivered to the business.
  • Lead a team to deliver using best practices within the data science lifecycle including design thinking, modelling, presentation and operationalizing the end product.
  • Manage and maximize resources balancing between development of team and delivering value to the business.
  • Identify the right algorithms and statistical techniques for a specific project as well as the best features for a model.
  • Deliver effective presentations of findings and present to multiple levels of stakeholders, with a special focus on explaining technical details in non-technical terms.
  • Proactively partner with key subject matter experts across various functional teams within the Health and Risk Solutions business to identify, develop and implement predictive modeling and analytics from start to finish.
  • Develop and maintain high-quality, robust predictive models using advanced analytic techniques.
  • Support data-centric business practices related to risk assessment within the Health and Risk Solutions business, including adoption of deployed models
  • Evaluate the effectiveness and appropriateness of new technologies, such as Generative AI, in assigned use cases.

What you will bring with you:

  • Ability to work with a diverse range of people
  • Bachelor, Master’s or PhD degree in a statistical, mathematical, or technical field (e.g., computer science, actuarial science)
  • 8+ years of experience in developing and implementing data science techniques is highly preferred
  • Experience in Health or Group insurance industry
  • Experience with sales and/or underwriting related concepts utilized in the health insurance field preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise with a broad range of statistical programming languages, applications and data environments (e.g., R, Python, SQL, Tableau)
  • Demonstrated expertise in data science including conditioning, modeling, integration and visualization
  • Strong knowledge of the fundamental statistical and AI underpinnings of data science
  • Commitment to data compliance, model governance and security protocols
  • Excellent business acumen to understand why and how the work we do will impact our business stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills, with an ability to explain technical concepts to a non-technical audience.

  • Southern region: $131,400-$197,100 annually  
  • Central region: $138,600-$207,900 annually  
  • Northern region: $148,100-$222,200 annually  

If you are a Colorado resident, the salary range for this position is $125,400-$188,100 annually.

If you are a New York resident, the salary range for this position is $148,100-$222,200 annually.

If you are Washington resident, the salary range for this position is $138,600-$207,900 annually.
