About the Role:

We’re looking for a Senior Manager of Data Science to lead our growing team, which currently has two senior data scientists! The data science team was fully established in summer 2021 and the team is putting the foundational pieces we need in place. We are looking for a lead who can continue building out the data science team and collaborate with other teams to get models into production.

Our data science team is full-stack, meaning we own the DS process end-to-end from training models to API deployment. We code in Python, and we use technologies like Docker, Redshift, FastAPI, and PyTorch. We work in two-week sprints with daily scrums, bi-weekly planning, demos, and retros.

What you’ll do:

  • Manage, mentor and coach data scientists
  • Shape the roadmap for data science with the team’s product manager
  • Facilitate communication with other teams, including product managers and engineering managers, to ensure data science needs are on other teams’ roadmaps
  • Collaborate with our platform team to ensure we have the infrastructure we need for data science
  • Define processes and standards for the team to follow
  • Jump in code reviews
  • Advocate for best data practices throughout the organization including thinking about what data we should be collecting
  • Evangelize data science throughout the company
  • Recruit data scientists to build up the team
  • Represent data science with external vendors

The skills and abilities you’ll need to succeed:

  • You have been the people manager of a data science teams before (at least two years of experience)
  • You have built out roadmaps for data science teams
  • You’re excited about joining a new team and developing best practices
  • You like working in a startup environment; part of your job will include establishing the infrastructure needed for data science
  • You can collaborate with folks across the company, e.g. product, engineering, finance, operations, and sales
  • You enjoy thinking about industry best practices for data science projects
  • You have experience writing production Python code that follows best software engineering practices including writing unit tests and Dockerizing projects
  • You care about ensuring that the algorithms the team builds are not biased against specific groups of people
  • You enjoy working with a team of goofy people who do things like name all of their projects after candy
