Data Scientist- Logistics Team

About the Team

At Stitch Fix, our data science team combines machine learning with expert human judgment to generate innovative recommendations and insights that transform the way our clients discover what they love. We believe in a curiosity-driven, data science culture where members have autonomy to deliver impact through end-to-end, full-stack product development and ownership. The diversity of the problems that we work on and the data-rich environment of our business make it possible, even essential, to bring the tools of multiple disciplines to bear on our hardest problems. We are looking for data scientists and leaders to join us as we revolutionize retail.

The Logistics Algorithms team helps the business put the right things, in the right places, and at the right times in order to delight our clients and efficiently operate the business. Team members are owners of the health of our fulfillment network, ensuring our clients can find the fits and styles they love. Alongside partnerships in merchandise planning, finance, and operations, we build tools to optimally manage the ingestion and circulation of merch, and power decision frameworks that help the business understand impacts through leveraging data insights.

About the Role

As a Data Scientist on the team, you will help drive the roadmap and implementation of our core capabilities powering our allocation and flow of new merchandise throughout our network of warehouses, and managing the ingestion of merchandise into our multi-staged discount, clearance, and liquidation pipelines. Some particular challenges include:

  • Developing and acting on a measure of inventory health across our network that speaks to the personal needs of each Stitch Fix client in conjunction with merch and finance partners
  • Optimizing the assortment of new inventory at each warehouse to ensure each client can find the best 5 items for their next fix
  • Managing the freshness and quality of inventory through optimizing the ingestion of new merchandise into our network and managing low performing merch through our clearance process
  • Proactively developing and grading novel approaches to fulfillment, including global network strategy and transportation
  • Identify and support opportunities to increase the velocity and visibility of our merch to increase the work our inventory does as we own it

This team has considerable opportunity for impact, by combining a deep focus on ensuring a client-right approach to inventory management with smart, active processes to increase business efficiency and unit margin.

You're excited about this opportunity because you will…

  • Solution at high speed with an eye for delivering 50%, 80%, and 100% solutions over the lifetime of a project
  • Drive novel decisioning in logistics and fulfillment strategy that leverage Stitch Fix’s key differentiators in personalization and styling
  • Work cross-functionally with product, engineering, and business leaders to develop and scale logistical capabilities
  • Leverage data to power optimization engines that drive higher margins while better serving clients with just the right merchandise

We’re excited about you because…

  • You drive for resiliency. You take a principled approach to complexity, and can make smart bets on where to invest time and system burden for maximum business impact
  • You have a background or expertise in performing optimization, Operations Research, or B2C logistics in an integrated, performant system
  • You know how to balance short-term needs with a long view when building a product
  • You are comfortable developing and maintaining production code in Python, including principled deployment and testing
  • You can smartly leverage insights and models from across the business to scale your ability to action on data
  • You’re happiest as a team player, able to balance time against multiple systems and work streams that span the team’s charter
