StreetLight pioneered the use of Big Data analytics to help transportation professionals and data analysts measure, analyze and improve transportation. Applying proprietary machine-learning algorithms to location data from mobile phones, vehicle navigation devices and IoT, StreetLight sheds light on travel patterns and makes them available on-demand via the world’s first SaaS platform for mobility, StreetLight InSight®. From measuring traffic volumes to optimizing new infrastructure to planning for autonomous vehicles, StreetLight powers more than 10,000 projects every month. StreetLight was recently acquired by Jacobs but continues to operate as an independent software organization.

StreetLight recently launched a special team that does early-stage product and data science research and development, focusing on emerging or advanced topics. This small team reports directly to the CEO, and will help push StreetLight and transportation data and industry to the next generation of tools, use cases, and smart policy-making for transport systems.

We are looking for a creative, collaborative, and self-driven data scientist or software engineer to help power this work. This particular role will focus on developing predictive models to understand present and future transportation dynamics. The right candidate will be able to infer patterns from telemetry/movement data and combine it with additional information about land use, transportation networks, population distribution in order to develop predictive applications.

A variety of backgrounds may be suitable for this role. Perhaps you’re a transportation researcher with experience developing activity-based models. Or a software engineer who’s worked with telemetry/movement data and routing engines based on OpenStreetMap. Or a data scientist who’s skilled at working with land use, population, or graph data. Or something entirely different, with the abilities and knowledge to move us forward. If you think you may be a fit, we encourage you to apply.

Location: We are flexible on the location of this position. It could be in any one of our three main offices (San Francisco, CA, Richmond, VA, or Vancouver, BC), or remote within the US or Canada.

Responsibilities

    • Design algorithms to infer transportation patterns from various data sources
    • Research and implement suitable strategies and models for solving data science problems
    • Find and build real-world data sets for developing/training various models and doing quality checks
    • Create visualizations and/or dashboards to help tell stories with data
    • Define and implement customized and/or cutting-edge solutions for customers

Qualifications

    • BS/MS in Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics, or another field with a focus on quantitative research and discovering insights from data
    • 3 - 5 years of experience in data science, software engineering, or statistics, with experience using tools such as R or Python
    • Proficiency in SQL and relational databases
    • Strong understanding of techniques in data science and/or transportation modeling
    • Specialized skills in relevant areas are a plus. This could be: machine learning, graph networks, transportation and land-use modeling techniques (e.g. four-step models, dynamic traffic assignment, agent-based models, land-use models), routing engines (e.g. OSRM, Valhalla)
    • Geospatial skills are a big plus (e.g. GIS, PostGIS, GDAL, OpenStreetMap)
    • Strong data analysis skills, good judgment and intuition around what can/cannot be possible, and ability to creatively develop potential approaches to hard problems
    • Good communication skills: written, visual, and verbal
    • Intellectual curiosity, quick learner, team player
    • Ability to come up with creative technical pathways to achieve a purpose, and assess which pathway is the most suitable. Ability to make appropriate compromises to enable scalability and productization of algorithms
We understand that the best candidates don’t always match everything in the job description. If you think you’re a fit for this role, please apply!
