The Team

The Torch Data and Analytics team exists to create data products and strategic insights that empower both Torch and our customers to make better decisions. With this product-driven focus, our data infrastructure, analyses, and research can make a significant impact.

The Engineering Manager, Data and Analytics works closely with stakeholders from across the organization to drive Torch’s data strategy. As the leader of our team, you’ll be defining how the Data and Analytics team delivers strategic business insights that are accurate, reliable, and reproducible. This role is crucial in continuing to build and sustain a world-class data team culture - one which provides team members open and supportive leadership and a clear path for growth both personally and as a group.


The Engineering Manager, Data & Analytics, will report directly to  the Chief Technology Officer. .

Your Position

    • Drive the scope and effectiveness of the Data and Analytics team at Torch.
    • Create a common data framework so that all company data can be analyzed in a unified manner.
    • Work with the product, operations, and executive management teams to create data-enabled products to drive efficiency and decision-making.
    • Develop a roadmap for the Data and Analytics Team that clearly defines ownership and responsibility between the team and the data consumers.
    • Collaborate with all functions of the company to ensure data needs are addressed, and that the required data is modeled and available to analysts and end-users.
    • Take part in regular agile rituals (stand-ups, sprint planning/retro, technical feasibility analysis).
    • Mentor engineers, and have regular 1:1 meetings with all direct reports.
    • Our Engineering Management roles write code a minority of the time, but we are interested in candidates who enjoy coding and want to remain technical.

Your Experience

    • 5+ years of data engineering or analytics experience, plus a degree in a quantitative field such as math, physics, computer science, etc.
    • 5+ years of experience in a leadership position managing an analytics team.
    • A broad knowledge of data pipeline execution from origin to consumption.
    • A growth mindset.
    • Created and developed partnerships with internal team members towards delivery of impactful analytics solutions.
    • Written, maintained and supported data integrations using Python.
    • Hands-on experience with Python, SQL and relational databases. Experience with dbt and Redshift is a plus.
    • Worked with multiple executive-level business stakeholders.
    • Built visuals in BI tools such as Periscope, Apache Superset, or Mode.
    • The desire to work in accordance with our team values and help the team evolve.
    • The ability to partner with our Talent Acquisition team to recruit and retain top caliber Data Engineers and Analysts. 

How You'll Ramp

    • First 30 Days
    • Familiarize yourself with Torch’s operations, products, and values.
    • Provide feedback and contribute to Data and Analytics team charter.
    • Have 1-on-1’s with each member of the data team, orient to the nuances of projects scoped for the year.
    • You will have 1-on-1’s and pairing sessions with some of the people you will be working closely with, including the Product Engineering, Product, Operations and Executive teams.
    • Do a deep-dive into our codebase and learn more about our architecture.

    • First 60 days
    • You will be able to answer questions about what data exists and is ready for consumption.
    • Ship your first data integration complete with documentation, automated testing, and validation.
    • Gain a more robust understanding of the needs of the data platform and becoming more comfortable with diagnosing problems.
    • Lead team rituals (i.e. sprint planning/ retrospectives)

    • First 90 days
    • Spend time exploring what tools or processes can be implemented to improve the efficiency of our team and Torch as a whole.
    • Lead planning team roadmap and strategy.
    • Participate in the technology department level leadership rituals.
