The Opportunity
The Torch Data and Analytics team exists to create data products and strategic insights that empower both Torch and our customers to make better decisions. It is with this product-driven focus that our data infrastructure, analyses, and research can make a significant impact.
The Data and Analytics team is still in its early phases of building out our team, so as a data analyst, you’ll be working as a business partner with stakeholders to empower them to use data within their domain of expertise. With our team, you’ll be turning raw, disorganized data in a data warehouse into strategic business insights that accurate, reliable, and reproducible.
Objectives
- Advocate for improvements to data quality, security, and query performance that have an impact across the team
- Thoroughly understand the team's domain and how it contributes to overall business strategy
- Share your knowledge frequently with your teammates and contribute to the team's documentation.
- Encourage your teammates to openly share their opinions and contribute to discussions in a respectful manner.
- Represent Torch and its values in public communication around broader initiatives, specific projects, and community contributions
- Utilize SQL and Git to build new analyses and maintain existing reporting
- Communicate and train people on how to best use our reporting tools (we use Sisense)
- Understand and document the full lifecycle of data and our common data framework so that all data can be integrated, modeled for easy analysis, and analyzed for data insights
- Follow and improve our processes for maintaining high-quality data and reporting
- Create analyses and models that meet our internal standards for style, maintainability, and best practices
- Maintain and advocate for these standards through code review, including testing, documentation, and reproducibility
- Maintain deliverables, projects, and timelines for your business stakeholders
- Communicate findings clearly to a broad range of stakeholders.
Competencies
- Business acumen and understanding of SaaS company metrics
- A track record of working autonomously, with strong organizational and time management skills
- Experience building reports and dashboards using modern data visualization tools such as Mode, Looker, Sisense, or Apache Superset. Bonus points if you have experience working with d3 or notebook technologies.
- Clear and direct communication skills about complex technical topics
- A solid understanding of data warehouses (we use Redshift) and experience cleaning and modeling raw data (we use dbt)
- Hands-on experience working with SQL, Python, and JSON to generate business insights and drive better organizational decision making
- Prior experience working with software development tools, like Git and the command line
- Comfort working in a highly iterative environment

Onboarding - First 30 Days
- Having one-on-ones and pairing sessions with some of the people that you’ll be working closely with, including members of the customer experience, sales, and product teams.
- Working in Sisense for Cloud Data Teams, writing SQL queries to produce dashboards
- Getting a clear sense of where prioritization comes from
- Starting to understand Torch’s operations, products, and values.
Onboarding - At 60 Days
- Comfortable working with dbt via the command line
- Contributing to internal conversations on data organization and structure
- Able to answer questions about what data exists and is ready for consumption
- Answering questions using dashboards and analyses that already exist and contributing to our data catalog
- Partnering with your manager to identify what types of projects you’d like to tackle to align with your goals and passions
Onboarding - At 90 Days
- Regularly contributing to documentation and housekeeping improvements for the team
- Gathering requirements, scope, and build analysis with some guidance from more senior members of the team
- Considering what conferences you’d like to attend or brainstorming how you’d like to utilize your training allowance
- Spending time floating around in the data exploring what interesting findings you can make on your own
