The Team

As the Principal Data Engineer at Upstart, you will architect and lead strategic planning and execution of critical data services and products for the company. The mission of Upstart data engineering team is to enable smooth access to all relevant data to relevant stakeholders. The team is responsible for managing the platform and infrastructure, process to ingest and process data and enforce data best practices for the company. The team works closely with Product teams, ML teams and Analytics teams to understand the requirements and onboard / implement infrastructure and processes to collect data and prepare for consumption. 

As Principal data engineer you will be a key ally of the senior technical leadership in architecting the path forward to ensure success through effective use of data. You will work on some of the most challenging foundational problems to enable smooth data collection through scalable processes and model the data for consumption by cross functional teams.

Position Location - Remote | United States

Time Zone Requirements - The team operates across all time zones in the United States!

Travel Requirements - We are digital first organization meaning you can work anywhere in the United States. We have quarterly on-site collaboration sessions. These meet-ups occur 3 days per Quarter at one of our offices (San Mateo, CA or Columbus, OH). Upstart will cover all travel related expenses need to travel to make these meetups!

How you’ll make an impact:

• Help lead the Data Engineering team towards better data product solution designs and data modeling practices
• Work with cross-functional teams to understand business data needs and develop solutions to meet those needs
• Design, build, maintain, and monitor high-quality data pipelines to facilitate a variety of data-driven use cases following Minimum Viable Product (MVP) principles
• Maintain high standards of engineering excellence through code reviews, unit tests, robust alerting, and cross-functional collaboration
• Mentor junior engineers and be ambassador of data to broader ML, Business and Product organization

What we’re looking for: 

• Minimum requirements:
  • 12+ year(s) of experience in the Data Engineering and Analytics space preferably with both batch and streaming oriented systems
  • Expert in coding with Python or Java, and SQL
  • Experience in designing and implementing big data (50 TB +) systems for data collection, transformation and presentation 
  • Experience working with modern data tech stack like Redshift, Databricks, Kafka, Airflow etc.
• Preferred qualifications:
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly with explaining technical or complex matters to non-technical audiences
  • Experience working with large and complex data sets
  • Expertise building real-time and batch data pipelines at scale
  • Experience with workflow management and data pipeline orchestration tools
  • Experience leading cross-functional technology initiatives and working in a collaborative environment

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within this range: $166,700-$245,000. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k). Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure.
