Job Title:            Senior Data Engineer, Application Development

Reports To:        Manager of Data Architecture

Location:            Ventura, CA

As the Senior Data Engineer of Application Development, you support the Manager of Data Architecture in the implementation and maintenance of the Patagonia Enterprise Data Platform.  Your primary responsibilities include developing and designing enhancements of the Enterprise Data Platform including the Modern Analytic Database and the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW).  As well as designing new subject areas and writing specs for data requests, implementing data pipelines for ETL or ELT.  You will work on multiple projects involving highly scalable and extensible data and BI analytic platforms like Snowflake, Azure Synapse, and SQL Server which will enable analytic user’s analysis of data sets from enterprise wide subjects and all channels.  You will play a major role developing and aligning the data for analytics technologies into scalable IT & business capabilities. You serve as the Patagonia ETL and ELT expert for the EDW and Modern Data Platform.  As well as providing dedicated Snowflake, Azure, and SQL Server (SSIS) ETL development skills to assist with the development and support of the Enterprise Data Platform.  Additionally, you will help analyze data from source systems to assist with technical design and the implementation of related data project activities and tasks. You will perform daily data loads, peer reviews and validation to support Patagonia Global Business Units across all channels and all functional teams.

What You’ll Do:

  • Build modern data pipelines for the Enterprise Data Platform in Snowflake
  • Improve current systems and data flows by developing, testing, and supporting the new modern data platform and tools with Snowflake
  • Build SSIS ETL solutions to collect and store data sets from various data sources following basic design standards
  • Analyze datasets for accuracy and quality
  • Evaluate specific systems operational data and how it affects surrounding systems and business usage
  • Develop, test, tune, deploy, and support Data Integration solutions for various data analytics systems
  • Support Enterprise data platform needs based on standard and modern data architecture processes
  • Contribute to the team’s knowledge base with useful information such as adopted standards, procedure documentation, problem resolution advice, etc.
  • Participate in the promotion of Snowflake, SQL Server and Azure best practices
  • Collaborate with other technology teams and architects to define and develop solutions
  • Work with the team to establish and reinforce disciplined software development, processes, standards, and error recovery procedures deployed; ensuring a high degree of data quality
  • Be a technical leader and be able to manage projects by defining tasks and working together with other data engineers, analysts, business representatives on large projects
  • Develop, write and implement technical requirements and participate in peer reviews
  • Facilitate and/or create new procedures and processes that support advancing technologies or capabilities to enhance data and analytics
  • Write and execute unit test plans. Track and resolve any processing issues.
  • Work with enterprise systems team to implement and maintain operational disaster-recovery procedures
  • Participate in the review of code and/or systems for proper design standards, content and functionality.
  • Participate in all aspects of the SDLC practices related to the Data Platform
  • Analyze files and map data from one system to another
  • Meet timeliness and accuracy goals.
  • Communicate status of work task assignments in a timely and clear manner
  • Responsible for technical and production support documentation in accordance with department standards and industry best practices.
  • Maintain current knowledge on new developments in technology-related industries
  • Contribute to project discoveries, kickoff, design, deploy and testing
  • Champion the enterprise data effort to deliver critical data analytic needs

Experience you Bring

  • A minimum education level of: Bachelor of Arts/Sciences Degree (4-year) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical area
  • 5-8 years of related work experience as a Data Engineer
  • Ability to lead a technical team and provide mentorship and leadership to junior team members
  • Experience implementing modern data pipelines using Snowflake
  • Experience of designing and developing databases utilizing star schema design (SQL Server 2016, 2017 & 2019)
  • Strong experience of creating and managing all SQL Server database objects (jobs, tables, views, indices, stored procedures, UDFs, triggers, etc)
  • Experience building and supporting data sources for analytical tools like Tableau and Power BI
  • Expert in all components of SQL Server (Database Engine, SSIS)
  • Expert in ETL and ELT processes within SQL Server or Azure
  • Experience implementing and supporting Snowflake and the Microsoft BI stack (i.e. SSIS, SSAS, SQL Azure, Azure Synapse)
  • Experience of Azure Platform Services, VM’s, Azure SQL DB & DW, Data Factory, and other Azure services
  • Creating, managing and monitoring all ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) tasks using SSIS and other integration tools as required.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality
  • Database performance tuning using the tools available within SQL Server
  • Some knowledge of C# or .Net development and PowerShell
  • Understanding and ability to participate in Agile project management processes related to Agile and Hybrid Agile methodologies
  • Available for support calls 24/7 on an as needed basis
  • Must be able to prioritize workload and manage complex requirements from diverse stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with all levels of employees
  • Ability to work independently to accomplish work objectives, as well as in a team environment
  • MS Azure or SQL Server Certification preferred
  • Tableau and Power BI data modeling experience preferred
