The Team: 

The ML Verifications team builds production ML models to verify the authenticity of credit applications and mitigate risk. These models detect various types of fraud across Upstart’s portfolio of products and are at the heart of Upstart’s mission, enabling effortless credit based on true risk.

As a Senior Research Scientist in ML Verifications at Upstart, you will work in a fast-paced team with a focus on feature research, model improvement and model deployment.  You will directly own critical models, directly contribute to some of the most important business metrics and tackle some of the following challenges:

  • Detecting scaled fraud attacks
  • Developing innovative features to target fraudulent behavior
  • Building new models for our core personal loans product and/or our new product initiatives
  • Quantifying and optimizing the tradeoff between fraud detection and conversion

  • Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Columbus, Austin, San Mateo, or Remote 
  • Time Zone Requirements - This team operates on either the East, Central, or West Coast time zones.
  • Travel Requirements - This team has regular on-site collaboration sessions six times annually split between our San Mateo or Columbus office locations. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.

Autonomously develop and deploy production modelsContribute to a high-quality modeling codebase in PythonQuickly prototype and test ideasResearch novel modeling techniquesWork collaboratively with a cross-functional team consisting of research scientists, software engineers and product managers

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Excellent critical thinking
  • Bachelor in a scientific discipline (Math, Physics, Computer Science)
  • 2+ years of experience in Machine Learning, or similar field
  • Proficiency in a programming language (Python preferred)
  • Proficiency in Statistical/Probability/Machine Learning theory
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a non-technical audience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent critical thinking
  • Masters or PhD in a quantitative discipline (Math, Physics, Economics, Computer Science)
  • 4+ years of experience in Machine Learning, or similar field
  • Experience leading junior members in a technical team
  • Deep expertise in a programming language (Python preferred)
  • Deep expertise in Statistical/Probability/Machine Learning theory
  • Excellent communication skills to a non-technical audience
