We are an international AgTech startup pioneering an ambitious program to solve some of our toughest climate and economic challenges. Through the use of data-driven insights, natural microbiology, and innovative digital technologies, Indigo Ag is partnering across the supply chain to create scalable climate solutions that both improve the farmers’ bottom line and reduce atmospheric greenhouse gas levels.

Our mission is unique, and therefore our teams are too: from multigenerational farming gurus who understand the land as though it were an extension of themselves, to cutting-edge techies on the frontier of innovation, our teams are a reflection of the range of the stakeholders we serve: the Earth, the Farmer, and the Consumer.

Indigo’s Core Modeling team builds tools to quantify the environmental benefits of changing the way farming is done. We are looking for a data scientist to help build the next generation of modeling and quantification tools that will enable carbon sequestration in agricultural soil to reach the gigaton scale. In addition to working closely with the engineers, scientists, and data scientists on the Core Modeling team, the candidate will be a member of the broader community of data scientists working across Indigo, creating opportunities to learn from and collaborate with fellow data scientists.

Responsibilities:

Using a mix of external data and our rich proprietary data, leverage a range of skills including statistics, modeling, machine learning, simulation, analytics and data visualization to enhance existing models and to push the state of the art.

Improving models:

  • Modernize the techniques and datasets used by models to predict carbon sequestration and abatement
  • Collaborating with biogeochemical scientists and other data scientists, improve the way in which the uncertainty of emissions reduction is quantified
  • Contribute to calculating the permanence of carbon in the soil; summarize the results of permanence and other long-term monitoring

Estimating emissions reduction at small scales:

  • Shape the way that growers are compensated for removal and abatement of greenhouse gas emissions by conducting analyses, deriving insights, and helping to implement solutions in production
  • Contribute tools that give growers insights into their sequestration and abatement

Sample design and survey statistics:

  • Support the adoption of new, more efficient sample designs for choosing where and how to collect measurements
  • Analyze and summarize potential sources of bias by leveraging existing tools and extending them to be more capable

Reporting:

  • Conduct analyses at multiple points in the calculation of carbon credits and document them so that they can be shared with verifying bodies
  • Implement reporting for new carbon projects, in collaboration with engineers and the policy team

Competencies:

  • Eagerness to learn about new areas. We work on a lot of different topics—from carbon accounting to soil science to survey statistics to regenerative agriculture—and candidates need not be familiar with all these topics on day 1.
  • Collaborate on data exploration and reporting with teammates using a version control system, working in SQL and Python
  • Understand and manipulate data to create visualizations with actionable insights for internal and external consumption. Make creative and aesthetically appealing visuals that tell a story to enable clear and impactful action
  • Collaborate well cross-functionally in a professional and effective manner. Balance and prioritize competing demands to create the highest overall value
  • Translate functional requirements into easy-to-use, flexible reporting solutions
  • Articulate complex ideas and concepts into understandable insights that enable decisions for specific audiences
  • Refine broad or ambiguous goals into clear questions and actions
  • Demonstrate outstanding problem-solving skills
  • Actively seek answers to questions as a self-starter

Qualifications:

  • BS or higher in a technical field and/or relevant industry experience.
  • Technical Requirements:
    • 1+ years experience with Python (or 1+ years experience with a similar language such as R, Matlab, etc., and an eagerness to learn Python)
    • SQL familiarity (deep expertise is not needed)
    • Familiarity with a visualization framework (e.g., matplotlib, ggplot)
    • Experience with version control (preferred)
  • Experience working cross-functionally:
    • Experience working with agile software development teams (preferred)
    • Ability to work with diverse stakeholders to translate ambiguity into clear project requirements
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, growth environment

Benefits:

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance for you and your family
  • Generous time off
  • Parental leave
  • A remote-first organization with flexible work hours
  • 401(k) plan

Indigo is committed to living our values, specifically creating a work environment where everyone feels respected, connected, and has opportunities to learn and grow. As part of living our values, we strive to create a diverse and inclusive work environment where everyone feels they can be themselves and has an equal opportunity of succeeding.
